S05E12 - The Lambent Zenith Part 3

General Summary

Summary: "Stormbreakers: The Reunion and the Scabbers" The adventuring party continues exploring the crashed spelljamming ship Lambent Zenith, now entering the starboard side of the wreck. This twisted wreckage contains the remnants of a spelljammer lifeboat, now overtaken by a treant that has rooted itself there.   Inside the lifeboat is Acosta, a blink dog and former companion to Davros, who had earlier separated from the group during the crash. The treant cannot move, and Acosta has been stranded—unable to blink due to the disorienting nature of the Astral Sea. As the group reunites with Acosta, a key secret is revealed: Acosta and his friend once survived a pirate attack, but a third survivor, a halfling named Polena, also escaped in another direction. Acosta had kept this hidden, fearing Davros would chase after her recklessly.   The party interacts with Acosta, who wears a magic collar allowing it to speak. They also retrieve a Potion of Mind Reading, which may be useful later, and note the significance of secrets in this campaign's link to Vecna.   After discussions, they decide to escort Acosta back to Davros. The reunion is heartfelt, with a touching moment between Davros and his blink dog. The players treat Acosta with kindness—offering bacon and emotional support—and confirm that he is still friendly and loyal.   Random Encounter – Night Scabbers Attack While flying back to Davros with Acosta, the party is ambushed by two Night Scabbers—giant, space-faring shark-like creatures whose black hides are speckled with star-like patterns, blending into the Astral Sea.   Combat unfolds:   Ozis unleashes a powerful Harm spell.   Dell goes into martial arts mode, using a combination of strikes and restraint effects to keep the creatures in check.   Ezra casts Guiding Bolt and other radiant spells.   Zip, the invisible rogue/magic-user, maneuvers tactically and attempts to switch weapons mid-combat.   Acosta even joins the fray, attempting to bite one of the beasts.   The battle ends with the group successfully killing both Scabbers, harvesting meat from the creatures in hopes of cooking a meal. This provides a rare moment of levity and humor as the group jokes about scabber sushi, stew, and space food.   Reunion and Rest The group returns to Davros with Acosta, prompting a sweet reunion scene between man and dog. The crew then settles in for a long rest, eating some of the cooked scabber meat (fortunately avoiding food poisoning), and enjoying a brief respite.   During downtime, Zip engages with the Githyanki crewmates, particularly Zastra, building camaraderie and learning more about their military background and hatred for the illithids (mind flayers). The Githyanki had defected to join the mission of Lambent Zenith, a ship devoted to spreading light throughout the Astral Sea.   The group also learns more about the Captain Inda, who is thought to still be alive in the forecastle. Inda is described as a celestial being with only one leg and one wing, having lost both in a massive battle that also claimed the life of her true love, Evred Montrei-Vayir, known to Inda as Sponge. This emotional detail is shared by Figaro, another crew member, as a way to help the party gain Inda’s trust.   Multiversal Musings and The Road Ahead As the group rests, philosophical discussions emerge about the nature of the Astral Sea, multiverse travel, and alternate realities. Figaro explains that there are infinite versions of reality, and spelljammer ships can traverse these different existences. There’s mention of Sigil, the City of Doors, as a destination or goal for some survivors of the crash.   Equipped with this information and newly forged bonds, the party resumes their exploration, heading into the forecastle of the ship, where they expect to find Captain Inda—and likely the final piece of the Rod of Seven Parts.     The Final Moments – Into the Heart After returning Acosta to Davros and enjoying a brief rest aboard the remains of the Lambent Zenith, the party set their sights on the forecastle—the last unexplored section of the ship believed to hold both Captain Inda and the final fragment of the Rod of Seven Parts.   They soared once more across the eerie stillness of the Astral Sea and landed upon the prow deck, only to discover a colossal heart—half organic, half stone—beating ominously where the ship’s front section had embedded itself. Gossamer sails flutter like ghostly banners, and the shattered mast pierces through a doorway, blocking their entry and adding to the unsettling surrealism of the wreck.   As the players moved to investigate, they were met with foreboding imagery and whispered speculation. There was unease about the massive heart—its pulse vibrated through the floor beneath their feet. The party began discussing how to proceed: could someone like Anaya, the pseudo-dragon familiar, slip through the blocked passage? Could this heart be some eldritch entity or biological defense?   Before any final actions could be taken, the game master paused the scene, preserving the tension and setting up the next session for a dramatic entrance into the final chamber.   The session concluded with:   A shared sense of momentum—the next encounter promises emotional stakes and danger.   The party reminded themselves not to inadvertently “revive a corpse” (a running joke and half-serious concern).   A strong thematic cue that they were nearing both the end of the wreckage and the climax of their current arc aboard the Lambent Zenith.   A sense of respect and caution as they prepared to meet the possibly still-living angelic captain, Inda, who mourns her lost love and holds the key to their quest’s next step.   The game ended with players poised on the threshold, figuratively and literally, staring down the beating mystery at the heart of a shattered vessel in the void.
