Arcanist Khairi Sudonna Character in Sartova | World Anvil

Arcanist Khairi Sudonna

Khairi Sudonna is an Arcanist who regularly breaks ground on the fronteirs of arcanoscience. Her speciality in the cosmic, the astral, and everything pertaining to the Planar Danse and the Themes has led her to conflict with her peers in the past. Publishing a thesis in A Dimensional Treastise led to some ostracization by 882 AB, and her moving to Dinlirys with her daughter, Luna Vittora.   There, she purchased and maintained the Devachan Observatory, studying the relationship between the stars, the themes, the cosmic forces in the world, and arcane magic. The core Arcane Conservatory offers aid in name only, as around that time tensions with the Second Jeriec Empire had risen, and fringe sciences that dealt with other worlds on a practical level did not earn much funding. Instead, she funded her research into other worlds. Despite the prevailing theory being that the Themes were pools of cosmic energy, and not a binary state of existance that supports a set of initial conditions and lives completely separate from our own, effectively others universes, superimposed over our own.   By 898 she was 47, though magic has some hand in the aging of any Arcanist. Her studies had found proof of the other worlds as physical medium, and categorization of the levels to which reality can overlap with each other Theme. Yet, as it is experimental math, she had no proof of actual interdimensional travel... as it is not just a physical shift, but a translation. A different language of existance is required, for example in the Torfield where one would just become a dream figment and disappear as quickly as one.   Yet, upon encountering a group of investigators that claimed to travel between dimensions, as well as an artifact capable of the same, her studies found new purchase in the realm of plausibility. Though the Arcane Conservatory would not accept new theory in an active war, she would discover the possibilitys of interdimensional travel herself.   By 906 AB, with the war recently ended, she would present her findings to the Arcane Conservatory as it lied half-crumbled. With the demense of arcanoscience changed forever, she would suggest not one expedition, but two. Two experimental forays into other worlds. One known. One unknown.
Khairi is the daughter of Sadie Sudonna and a father she had not known for most of her life, and still has only discovered through legal channels. In truth, her father is Aven Brustholm, who had flings with a number of individuals while a young, raucous runic sorcerer before the Sorcerer's Crusade. Though Aven would become a spymaster and a responsible man, he his flings with Astria of Sudonna, and then her half-sister, Sadie Sudonna, would be a crime he never answered for.   Sadie was 21 at Luna's birth, young in an advanced city such as Golryon. Sadie came to Golryon to live near Aven, as the two truly did find love, but the Brustholm Estate, and Aven's father, disallowed this. Aven did not learn of Sadie's journey to see him, of his daughter, or of Sadie's death, for many years. Sadie died when Khairi was just 14.   Khairi's journey is a miracle as well, enabled in some ways by a small stipend from the Brustholm Estate, as hush money. She became a prestigious Arcanist despite everything set against her, yet it was in no small part due to family friends helping her when her mother died. However, it almost fell apart when she, a creative thinker and wonderer just like her mother, fell in love.   Silas Vittora was a thaumatergist, endlessly creative with the mundane forms of magic. As a son of a trader, he had little hope or desire to be a great Arcanist, but magitech trade suited him fine. He and Khairi found eachother in Golryon in early years, finding love, and later purpose. He led the Association of Thaumaturgy in later years, as Khairi became a true Arcanist.   However, it was due to this Association and his voice critical of the warlike tone of the city that often caused problems in his life. He was jailed for many years, unable to see Khairi or his daughter. Found guilty of insurrection in 893, he was imprisoned for many years, throughout the entirety of the War, until Aven Brustholm learned of this and forced his release thruogh back channels. A small good.   Silas died a year later, never quite recovering from his time in prison.
