Zombie Species in Saradon | World Anvil

Zombie

You want to kill a necromancer? Find a good hammer.
The term zombie does not refer to any one type of beast nor species of creature, but is instead used as a blanket term to refer to the lowest form of undead possible: a simply-raised corpse.   Unlike most other forms of undead which find their lineage in infectious diseases or natural magical events, zombies arose purely from the machinations of those who practice the black magics - namely necromancy, in this instance - as their creation is essential to the formation of the branch, and may be what began its studies in the first place.   As singular beings, zombies are entirely mindless creatures which act purely on the instinct to feed, chasing after any nearby living beings which they can sense and chasing after their prey until it eludes them - this doesn't often garner them a meal, but the outcome rarely matters to an individual zombie, as they don't need food to sustain themselves regardless.

Appearance and Abilities

Regardless of when it was raised, a zombie will continue decaying until can no longer hold itself together, skin and meat eventually beginning to quite literally fall in chunks from the creature's form as the thing rots - no signs of life remain present in its body, unlike other forms of undead, and its muscles seem to move themselves from stimulation brought on by their enchantment rather than any level of higher thought. To compare a zombie to a plant would not be entirely inaccurate, in this regard, as its desire to feed on nearby living beings doesn't seem comparable to any functions higher than that of a fly trap's reflex to close itself shut on an insect.   When left to its own devices - whether its bound master is killed or has simply released it from their control - a zombie will often either remain completely stationary until it is attracted by nearby sounds and movement or shamble aimlessly in random directions, swaying this way and that until it changes course after thumping against some sort of barrier. While still incredibly difficult to kill in such a state, unbound zombies can be considered nearly harmless in comparison to their bound counterparts, who present a considerable threat when under the control of a skilled necromancer.   Zombies bound under the will of a sorcerer could perhaps be more appropriately compared to insects than plants, for while they still hold no real sentience of their own, they seem to perform as something of a hive-mind, a state which has only been hypothesized in insects and their relatives, but seems readily present in these raised monstrosities. Likely due to bearing a shared source for the magic which raised them, each zombie under the control of a specific necromancer will be able to see, hear, and feel what all other members of its ilk can.
Kith are, of course, not the only beings which way be raised as undead - anything which once possessed organic life may have that same process simulated by dark magics, but kith and demikith are usually favored above other animals for their bipedal frames and ability to manipulate tools, for even the most decrepit of zombies seems to retain its capacity to swing around a weapon, if given one first. In the hands of a competent sorcerer, this means that these creatures may be used as effective soldiers rather than only simple cannon fodder.   To kill off a zombie
