Sanamancy

Sanamancy is a sect of magic devoted specifically towards the nurturing, bolstering, and repair of the soul itself; while all forms of magic require the use of one's own soul as a meeting point between their physical bodies, their mental will, and their supernatural intent, it is the sanamancer who learns to most directly interact with the very essence of other living beings. Among the most ancient and revered forms of magic, sanamancy is the counterpart and opposite to necromancy – focusing on the nurturing and direction of life rather than the conquering and binding of death – and its practice is considered of great importance across cultures both modern and ancient, from the Holy Clergy of the Golden Church of Pratan in Eletheros to the Treespeakers of north Ivskanic lands and the sages of the southern Kardan swamps.   Most commonly, at least in academic study, the image of the healer is what comes to mind first when sanamancy is discussed — and, indeed, the ability to rapidly increase the body's natural ability to heal is one which draws many a student of the arcane towards sanamancy as a focus of study. While the practice is far from being able to perform miracles, although the ability to revive the dead or cure the afflicted are goals constantly under study, it is far more effective than strictly scientific medical practices even now as civilized societies have moved past attempts to study the four humors.
