Thane

In the Rankan Empire a Thane holds a fief either from a Baron or from another Thane (i.e. a sub-fief).
Someone who holds multiple fiefs might be both a Baron and a Thane, in which case Baron is the higher title.

Appointment

Any Baron or Thane may sub-enfeoff part of their fief to a Thane with the permission of their feudal lord.
