Dwarf

"Get these fahkin' BROWN ELVES outta me ironworks before they take one of our jobs! Go back to the desert, damn knife ear!"   "I'm from Ljosalfheim, you intoxicated hairball!"   Proud, stout, and incredibly racist, dwarves are one of the strangest sentient beings in Sagrea. Although they are though to be distant relatives of the elves, they share absolutely none of their racial traits, from their pointed ears to their ability to channel magic effortlessly. In fact, their bodies cannot contain a large amount of mana at all.   Dwarves reside underground without a set amount of land for their "nations", rarely appearing on the surface unless it's to hunt or sell their wares. They spend their days mining away for precious metals in order to forge some of the greatest types of metal craftsmanship Sagrea has ever seen. Of course, their scattered city distribution and tendency to rarely leave them have caused dwarves to become relatively insignificant in the eyes of history, only becoming active as a race when something threatens the entire world.   ...Not that that was the only reason they don't interact with the rest of the world. Dwarves are infamous for being incredibly racist to every single non-dwarf. These intoxicated walking beards are willing to go out of their way to flaunt their "racial superiority" by insulting everyone else. They knowingly push the buttons of non-dwarves, and no insult is taboo to them as they have no concept of going too far. In addition, dwarves especially hate elves more than any other race. Not out of jealousy for the racial traits their "relatives" were gifted with, but out of sheer disbelief that they can even be related to "a bunch a' filthy knife-ears", as they call them.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Short, stout, and humanoid.

Biological Traits

Dwarves are known for their resilience and strength despite their height leading people to believe otherwise. It is impossible for them to grow beyond a certain height. With the exception of female dwarves, they almost always have a beard.

Growth Rate & Stages

Dwarves grow to their full height fairly quickly and reach full physical maturity around the same time as humans. Regardless of this though, they generally look much older than they really are, with their physical features resembling that of a middle aged/old human once they reach adulthood.

Ecology and Habitats

Often found in mountainous regions or any area with a rich vein of precious metals. Their settlements are almost always caverns that lead deep underground, as their homes double as their constantly growing mine.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Omnivorous. Because of their underground habitats, dwarves are not known to be picky with whatever food they can eat, but they have a great fondness for meat.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Dwarves can be found all over Sagrea, but they are most commonly spotted in the continents of Ophica and Aestus.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Dwarven names are custom made based on the individual's own traits. Expect a dwarf to give themselves a bombastic, extremely dramatic name such as Boarflayer Ironbreak or Whitebeard Thunderfist. Perhaps their love of such names stems from them trying to compensate for their short heights, and that's not just referring to their stature.

Beauty Ideals

To a dwarf, strength is the biggest factor in determining beauty rather than physical appearance. Doesn't matter what they look like, if they're strong, they will find the person attractive.   Unless that person isn't a dwarf. Then they are the ugliest bastard they have ever seen.

Gender Ideals

Male dwarves are seen as more desirable should they have a long beard. Both genders are seen as amazing if they have well built muscles and a great amount of skill when crafting or forging metal objects.

Courtship Ideals

Dwarves typically attempt to court others by showcasing their raw strength or crafting something personal for the target of their affections.

Relationship Ideals

As long as both partners can pull their own weight in a relationship, nothing else matters to them.

Average Technological Level

Dwarves are known to have some of the best metal forging techniques on the planet. Their structures are renowned for their durability and their weapons are prized for their strength. However, they refuse to use any modern conveniences given to them by other nations, partially out of a desire to stick to the "good old ways" as well as the usual dwarven bigotry.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Common tongue, and only common tongue. They refuse to speak in anything else unless its for something petty like insulting someone in their native language.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Dwarven culture takes pride in acts of heroism (by their standards) and bravery, most of which involves risking themselves for fellow dwarves or fighting massive beasts. They treat everyone from their home town as a family member, giving them a sense of unity against "lanky apes and knife ears".

Common Taboos

Getting involved with every single non-dwarf in Sagrea, with the only exception being for a practical reason such as selling wares or if they absolutely must fight with them to survive. Not that they'll ever enjoy doing that, though.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Dwarves absolutely loathe every single race that isn't their own. Especially elves, as they are genetically related to them yet do not share their racial "gifts". They just cannot believe they are related to an "inferior species".
Genetic Ancestor(s)
Lifespan
80 years, not that their life style often permits them to live that long.
Average Height
Nothing above 4'10".
Average Physique
Short and muscular of the stout kind. They are incredibly persistent and can withstand a great amount of punishment before succumbing to fatigue or wounds.
