The Invasion of Motuahi by Trilenius
Precursor: the discovery of ley lines
(Article idea: the discovery of ley lines on the globe of Sagadorm could be its own article in and of itself so I won't dictate it here.)
Vola, the first ferry, spent much of her life researching the magics that had now been bestowed upon her through the petro vacation of the last Dragon while she was inside. Much of her time was working with scribes to write down as much of the knowledge that was in her brain and then those scribes organize the information.
(Article idea: the great library of true Linea's: this is the library where all of the information is stored and where Vola worked on extracting the information from the dragons out. There is a special collections section that will contain all of the original works in books, preserved.)
One of the major discoveries of the ley lines is that they are able to circumscribe the entire globe. The major ley lines go around the entire globe were as minor ley lines branch off and connect them otherwise. This creates what could appear to be random lines and segments over the globe.
The ley lines are also directional. They do not just sit there stagnant Lee emanating magic but they are fibers along which power for pulses. This pulsing will only go one direction.
Vola discovered that it is the ley lines converge on tray Linea's. All of the ley lines that converge over tray Linea's are coming into tray Linea's.
(Article idea: Pulse Rider: these are machines that can tap in to the pulses of the ley lines and are able to travel along them. First generation pulse riders could only travel with the pulses. Second generation pulse riders could travel against the pulses.
The exploration of the ley lines by the Pulse Riders
The invention of the Pulse Riders allowed a fleet to be commissioned to explore them and to map them across the globe. The theory was that if there is a place like tray Linea's where all of the ley lines converge bringing in the pulses, there must be an opposite place where those pulses originate. It was the job of the Pulse Rider Corps to discover it.
The great exploration of the world and mapping the ley lines allowed tray Linea's to make contact with nearly every known civilization on the globe at that time. This allowed them to be first contact if not only contact that some of these cultures ever have made.
(Article idea: all of the different groups that road along with the Pulse Riders to map, make diplomatic relations, translators [by magic], etc.)
Eventually the Pulse Riders did find the island of Motuahi. When it was confirmed that Motuahi was indeed the source of all of the pulses the messages were sent back and the now elderly Vola wanted to see and feel this land.
Early diplomatic relations
The relationships between the inhabitants of Motuahi and Trilenius were peaceful and cordial. The welcoming nature of the Motuahi people made the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries easy.
The traditional procedure for establishing diplomatic relations was the following:
- received permission from the local authorities to visit the land.
- Received permission from the authorities to establish an embassy that functions as a research center focusing on learning the language, studying ley lines, and studying the natural resources of the locale.
- Establishing trade, if allowed by the local authorities.
The effects of "fresh" pulses on fairies
The pulses have a positive effect on fairies. Trilenius is a popular location for the fairies because all of the pulses traveling across the world come to Trilenius and help the fairies maintain their good health and longevity. However these pulses are "old" because they have already traveled across the world from Motuahi. The pulses in Motuahi are more intense and beneficial to the fairies health and longevity.
(All magic is done using the stones. It cannot increase the magic that the ferry can perform. The pulses does have a healing and restorative effect to the fairies that would normally require magic away from a ley line. It's like a warm heater that just helps them feel rejuvenated.)
In addition to fresh pulses being medicinally beneficial for the fairies, the likelihood of blessed animals being born increased greatly along ley lines and where they intersect. It was not understood by the Motuahi people why some of the wild animals were discovered petrified in the forests.
(Article idea parenthesis there could be a really interesting myth or belief about the petrified wild animals in the Motuahi culture that would be disproven by the fairies. This could be their own form of "Medusa" monster that petrifies those animals in the wild. They believe that there domesticated animals are protected by their "talismans" because none of their domesticated animals ever get petrified. But that's not how it works, domesticated animals can't be blessed.)
The concept of cores is taught to royal family of Motuahi. The fairies explain how the cores are used beneficial to magic users. The official embassy of Trilenius wants to establish trade and payment for the cores that are created on Motuahi. The king is accepting of the offer of trade.
There are smugglers and pirates who raid the different islands in search for these petrified animals to reclaim their cores. The difference between the Trilenius fairies and the smugglers is obvious based on how the animals are dealt with. The Trilenius harvesters remove the entire stone animal and then process it in centralized location. They do this to maintain the beauty of the wild of the island. The smugglers come in and just shatter the corpses to find the core and then leave.
The negative impact of the pirates and smugglers impacts the relationship between Trilenius embassy and the Motuahi royal family. The Motuahi royal family for bids the Trilenius harvesting and all of it will be done by native Motuahi. The royal family establishes nature preserves across the islands, especially where the ley lines cross so that the wild may remained wild and allow blessed creatures to continue to be born.
The legitimate and black market for Motuahi crystal cores explode. The cores are the ultimate in quality due to their being created so close to the expulsion nexus. The royal family of Motuahi notice the black market and take steps to "discourage it" and truly discover the value of these cores that are harvested only on this island.
Cultural Integration
The royal family of Motuahi began to realize the benefit of magic users in the tray Linea's culture. Since they were exclusively magic users and the Motuahi were not. The royal family requested to begin arranged marriages between high-powered fairy families of Trilenius and the royalty of Motuahi.
There was little differences in the climates of the two island nations as they were both on or near the equator of Sagadorm. Because of the powerful healing factors of the islands of Motuahi, there were many who were glad to move over to Motuahi to maintain health and extend their lives.
However there was difficulty in integrating the cultures as they were very distinct. The royal family was concerned that the integration of Trilenius bloodlines into the Motuahi royal family would dilute the loyalty of the royal family to the islands and their people. To be sure that the Trilenius culture did not overtake the native culture, the following steps were enacted by royal decree:
- All Trilenius fairies who married into the royal family would be required to renounce all titles positions and allegiances to their former country.
- They would be required to learn and speak the native language of Trilenius without the aid of magical assistance.
- They would be required to learn the cultural history of Motuahi and pass examinations that are similar to those required of the youth.
- They would be required to support themselves in traditional Motuahi professions. (I.e. they cannot be merchants, sailors, traders, or other professions that would allow them to maintain contact with outside influences.
- The professional exception includes anything related to the advancement of Motuahi's magical prowess. This included research into charging cores, harvesting cores, draconic language integration with native Motuahi. The development of magical schools to teach the new magic users that were to be born in Motuahi.
- Trilenius fairy man's were expected to enter into polygamists relationships as to be able to impregnate as many of the royal family members as possible. They were forbidden to have relations with other Trilenian women.
- Trilenius fairy women were expected to have large families by having a child every other year.
Despite the large number of restrictions placed upon the Trilenius fairies, there were many who were willing to take the opportunity. Those who left were those who were powerful fairies but not well established in the Trilenius social hierarchy. These adventurous fairies were willing to give up the old culture for something new because they did not feel like the old culture had something to give them.
There were many negative effects of this integration of the bloodlines between fairies and Motuahi royal lines. Those who were "adopted" into the royal family were still seen as third-class citizens who were not much more than breeding stock. While they were never treated poorly, the stigma against them socially and culturally was rampant.
There were many from Trilenius who came to Motuahi and were not adopted into the royal family and its integration efforts. However mixed-cultural children were born of commoners and developed magical powers as well.
Two tiered magical systems
The two type of magical users in Motuahi established to cultural differences. There were the "royal magicians" who were specifically bred for their magical powers. Then there were the "fairy people" who were born of commoners and fairies who emigrated to Motuahi.
The social strata that developed over the next hundred or 200 years was that of natives, Royals, fairies. After 100 years, the entire royal family were now varying levels of magic users. All of the pure blooded Motuahi royalty have since passed away. There are still people from Trilenius who are brought in to mate with the royal families to ensure that their powers increase but also that there's no problems with incestuous relationships. However there had been enough of the "common fairies" who were born and educated in Motuahi that they were being selected to participate in the royal family.
(This just sounds horrible. This is a terrible thing to do to a culture. But just because it's horrible doesn't mean it would be interesting stories.)
After 300 years of bringing in fairies from Trilenius, the practice ceased. There were enough royal family members who had set eventually spread out into nobility in the common and also those common fairies who never were a part of the royal breeding program. There were enough fair users in Moto who to sustain a population.
By the end of this " cultural exchange" the concept of mixed blood half blood or any other of those mulatto terms had gone away. It was true that the royal family did look a bit lighter than those who never mixed with fairies but it was no longer a reason to mock the royal family because they were diluted from the native Motuahi.
Cultural preservation through the centuries
The Motuahi culture remains the most distinctive culture throughout the world of Sagadorm. Even though it was one of the first who purposefully integrated the fairies in two their culture, due to the strict rules under which they were incorporated, there was very little of the Trilenius culture that was brought along. Very distinctive efforts were made by the early royal family members to preserve Motuahi culture to the exclusion of all others. They wanted the magic, but they wanted none of the culture.
However the Motuahi islands became as influential in the global economy of Sagadorm as Trilenius had prior to the discovery of Motuahi being the expulsion nexus.
The cultural preservation was not only in language, but also in architecture. The preservation of the feel of the original structures of Motuahi were maintained. However as advanced building techniques were developed and the advent of multistory and high-rise buildings, these cultural touchstones of architectural design remained.
(This is the same way that all of the buildings in the Southwest United States have that Adobe feel and other parts of the United States have their own style of building. The buildings of Motuahi remained looking like they were built with palm trees and timber exteriors.)
