Pulse Rider Corps Military Formation in Sagadorm | World Anvil

Pulse Rider Corps

The Pulse Rider Corps is a collection of many different professions who worked together to create the paramilitary group who explored the world for the ley lines that cross all over the surface of Sagadorm. The Pulse Rider Corps also served as an exploratory group who were out to seek new civilizations and make peace with them.

All members of the Pulse Rider Corps must be fairies who have demonstrated a fundamental skill and knowledge of magic and diplomacy. These corps members were the first contact often made between civilizations. They would determine if ambassadors would be allowed to stay and open diplomatic relations between Trilenius and the local population.

Sailors

Sailors formed the heart of the Pulse Rider Corps. They were those who sailed the ships and transported all of the other members of the corps around the world.

In the beginning of the corps, these were hardy sailors who were used to navigating boats through the islands of Trilenius and the nations that surrounded it. As the corps grew and sailing vessels improved, they were able to sail to all ends of the globe and sometimes circumscribing it.

The sailors of the corps included captains, officers, and common sailors. For longer expeditions, multiple vessels set out under the direction of an admiral.

Rarely did the number of sailors tally over 1/3 of a full complement of an expedition. However, by the time an expedition returned, the number varied based on how many settlers were able to remain in the foreign countries.

These sailors also functioned as soldiers if situations were to turn hostile. There were never trained to attack others on the offense but would set up strong defenses as they made hasty retreats in their vessels.

Cartographers

The primary purpose of the Pulse Rider Corps is to map out the ley lines surrounding the globe. These cartographers were well trained in using the sun and stars and moons to plot exact locations in logbooks that could then be used to create detailed maps of the ley lines.

The secondary purpose of the cartographers were to make sure line maps of the countries where they visited. This allowed them to map out the continents, islands, ports, and rivers that made up the natural geography. They also were able to make note of cities and civilizations that made their homes along the shores. If allowed to sail up rivers or explore over the land, they would make maps further into shore.

The technology used to detect ley lines went through many iterations as they were better understood and as the magic technology advanced. Devices were created that could measure the amount of ley line energy was evident in the air or on the surface. Ley lines were straight and are able to go on for miles. What is unknown is the thickness of the Ley line and if it branches off or intersects with another line.

Diplomats

The diplomats of the Pulse Rider Corps were specially trained for initial contact with new cultures and other civilizations spread across the globe. There were many differing levels of technology and societal advancement as they found new peoples. It was the objective of the diplomatic portion of the corps to establish an embassy and accompanying settlement in the different lands.

This was only done with the permission of the citizens of the local area. It was never meant to be a colonizing effort but as a chance to get to know other people.

The diplomats did follow a strict directive that they were not to interfere with the local politics or technological advancement of the country where they were posted. They were to create shelter and homes using the same material and defenses and style as the local people. They were encouraged to adopt the dress and language of the people as soon as possible. This went a long way to assure locals that they were not there to change anything in the local traditions but only to observe.

Even though all members of the diplomat contingency were fairies and could perform magic, it was discouraged to let this be known. They did not want to appear as extra-human, diety, or a threat to the local military or clergy.

Settlers

The settlers who went on the explorations to find ley lines were usually in for a one-way trip. These were those who wish to leave Trilenius and start over in a new world to be a part of and support to the diplomatic corps. The settlers were a wide variety of craftsman and farmers, diplomatic officers and security personnel.

When following a Ley line that happens to run into an island or a continent, the Pulse Rider Corps would explore the local territory for indigenous people. If none were found on the island or within many days travel. They would establish a trading post at the intersection of land and Ley line.

Different sizes of settlement groups were left in areas depending on the location and the proximity to other settlements. The more advanced the local culture as far as technology and security, the smaller the settlement group. The smallest group that is allowed to be left is 50 people. If there are multiple competing civilizations in the area the size would grow rapidly to as much as three or four times the normal group. If there is a settlement that is established with no other competing civilizations around, a group of 100 were left to establish a new outpost.

Security

There are some skilled mages that are a part of each settlement that are established. These high level fairies can provide a magical defense around the settlement and boost the effectiveness of the soldiers who are also to defend. These mages are to use magic as a last resort in their own defense and the defense of the settlement.

Non-magical means of defense are preferred to keep the suspicions of the magical powers to a minimum. Some magical efforts to keep people away are mental repellents, such as mild headaches, suddenly remembering important business, or just wanting to get away from there.
