Noxium

Properties

Material Characteristics

Noxium is distinctly noticeable. In a vein, it sucks up all the light around it, making it easy to find in a wall of stone. Light seems to bend toward it and war around it in unpredictable ways.

Physical & Chemical Properties

When held to a light source, Noxium immediately extinguishes it. It does the same with nonmagical flames, which makes it incredibly difficult to work with. An individual coated in Noxium armor is practically invisible outside of the Radiant Domes due to Noxium's light-bending properties. But the most important property of Noxium is that of its spell-manipulation properties. When a spell comes within a two foot radius of Noxium, the metal sucks in the magic, turning white for a brief moment. It then spits out the magic in an unpredictable way, using the original energy of the spell to create a similar spell effect. For instance, a fireball cast at Noxium might become several rays of fire that burn nearby targets or a firestorm that engulfs the room. If one of those bolts hits another piece of Noxium, the spell is warped even further. If a bolt of fire hit another piece of Noxium, it might become a ray of water. People inside a Noxium suit of armor are immune to the effects of the Noxium surrounding them, but cannot cast spells without the unintended alteration.

Compounds

Forging Noxium is a legendary feat. The tools required are specially enchanted, and the metal can only be forged outside of a Radiant Dome, adding to the danger. However, about two decades ago, a dwarf named Flynn created a metal alloy from Noxium. He wove the metal with an enormous amount of Radiant Energy, tempering its dark properties. The result is Duskstone, a metal that is harder than a diamond and lighter than steel. Duskstone was discovered before, but the secret was lost in the Breaking of the World. Flynn has kept the exact details of the process hidden, and is know very wealthy.

Geology & Geography

Noxium only forms in The Darklands.

Origin & Source

Strangely, Noxium did exist before The Nightwatcher came to Saeveroth. Its properties were the same.

Life & Expiration

The oldest Noxium has existed since before the Breaking. No deterioration process has been discovered as of yet.

History & Usage

History

Noxium has existed since the beginning of the world. The Arill gave their ironically-named Night Watch Guard suits of plate armor made out of Noxium. Since the Breaking, both the Shadowspawn and the forces of good have vied for the metal, knowing that it can give them an immense edge in battle.

Discovery

An ancient dwarf whose name has been lost to time first discovered Noxium. Most scholars simply call him "the Metalfinder,"  due to the fact that he discovered so many different metals.

Manufacturing & Products

Noxium has been used to create weapons, armor, shields, wands, and even a destruction device once. This device was placed in The Silent Mountain by an Arsaki war party. A spell was cast on the device that blew up a large section of the mountain, killing a Darklord .

Hazards

Liquid Noxium is very dangerous. It defies the pull of gravity, and can escape from sealed containers. Elven scholars have dubbed it a "superfluid." It is attracted to magic, and if no magic is to be found, magic-users.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Noxium is primarily sold by the outpost of Shadowatch to buyers who come to the settlement. Their prices are unusual, however, and do not ask for gold.

Storage

Noxium is usually stored in a cold, sealed, dark area.

Law & Regulation

Many of the Radiant Domes have restrictions on the trade of Noxium due to its volatile nature.
