Kaipei

Known as the Great Island among other names, Kaipei is a thin, crescent-shaped island in Saekai. It is the largest island in the archipelago.

Geography

Kaipei has the greatest area of any island in Saekai, so it naturally boasts the most diverse landscape. The southwestern portion of the island is home to a sandy, low-lying coastal chaparral that gives way to the Laemin Rainforest towards the center of the landmass. This jungle eventually yields to a coastal fen.   Further east, the loamy soil shifts to rocky terrain and gentle hills covered in sparse vegetation dominate the landscape. As the hills continue east, they gradually become mountains, finally rising to become the volcanic peaks of Tallu and Takai. Beyond the volcanoes is the thin peninsula called Fallow Point.   Continuing southeast, beyond the hills and mountains, a thin and serene tract of tall-grass prairie stretches for just over 60 miles before the climate becomes wetter and trees begin to dominate the landscape.   This region, the Choking Forest, is home to Sumaka, Kaipei's only Cymere outcrop.Traveling further north, the landscape becomes dominated by a swamp for several miles before the treeline abruptly ends.   Here, the landscape shifts to the rolling, temperate, fertile meadows of the Quiet Green. These meadows reach all the way to the north of the island where the terrain once more becomes mountainous and impassible. Beyond the Mahuati Range, no one is sure what the rest of Kaipei holds - cursory expeditions by spyglass and sailing vessel have shown the terrain surrounding the island to be hostile and unforgiving. It remains unexplored to this day.

Civilizations

If there are any civilizations (i.e. beyond isolated communes and temporary camps) in the far western reaches of Kaipei, they are very quiet. The Vailun people are the westernmost civilization, living in the hilly region around Tallu and Takai.   Further east, the Bayinae civilization sprawls across a narrow band of the Choking Forest. Their towns cease abruptly when the forest gives way to swamp. The northern portion of the Choking Forest is devoid of mankind, thanks in part to the inhospitable terrain and beasts roving the landscape.   Further north, where the treeline gives way to the Quiet Green, one can find sparse communities of Mauvoy people. The population density increases closer towards the Mahuati Range.
