The law requiring all Arais and vekorna to leave the solar system has come into effect. Leaving their friends at Saturn, Rametin and Kaelyn travel to Mars to investigate a lost human colony, only to find another, more violent, connection to Rykol's solar system.

On Terra, Monera tries to diffuse a volatile situation caused by the new law requiring Arais to leave within a year, and which leads to hostages, a rescue, and a life-and-death situation. Meanwhile, in orbit, Nrabé is beginning to assemble the laser array in the hopes of staving off the impending Vekornan arrival.
