Krutchina (Spirit of Sorrow)
Krutchina are the Condition Spirits of Sorrow. A wave of crushing despair accompanies these small hooded crones, but although they have the power to torment their victim with feelings of hopelessness, they are not inherently evil.
Basic Information
Ecology and Habitats
Krutchina can appear in any cold environment, but they are most commonly found in places where there has recently been a death, or in areas of high deprivation.
Additional Information
Facial characteristics
Krutchina have gaunt, sunken faces with chapped lips and dark circles under their pale grey eyes. Their sharp protruding cheekbones make them look starved, a visual indicator of how their sorrow eats away at them from the inside.
Civilization and Culture
Major Language Groups and Dialects
Krutchina speak Sylvan as their native language, and most can also speak, or at least understand, Common Ruslavian.
Some Krutchina inhabit places where Common isn't spoken much at all, such as the Krutchina of the more remote areas of the Sabrelands or the Hoary Wastes. These isolated spirits might speak the languages of the area instead of (or, more rarely, in addition to) Common Ruslavian.
Common Dress Code
Krutchina wear tattered grey hooded robes. Most will carry a money pouch, tied with a golden drawstring, and filled with coins that can be traded in deals that will make the victim more miserable than the trade would initially suggest. Their faded cloaks are pinned at the neck with a gold clasp in the shape of a sparrow skull.
Common Myths and Legends
Krutchina appear in the story of the golden duck eggs, as the creature that trades the golden duck for a crust of bread.
