Firbolg (FEER-bolg)

Firbolgs are a reclusive race of giant-kin who prefer to avoid contact with the other mortal races. They are the most intelligent of the giant-kin and a physically powerful one, though they lack the strength of the true giants.

Description

Firbolgs superficially resemble humans, with the males would sporting great, thick beards. Their thick, tough skin ranges from light blue to grey to fleshy pink, and brown, with their hair typically is worn long and unkempt and usually being dark, though other colours are not uncommon. A firbolg's voice is typically deep and smooth, and they tend to roll their consonants when speaking.   Firbolgs typically range from 7 to 8 feet tall, though a number of their race range both above and below the average. The typical firbolg also weighs between 240 to 300 pounds.

Lifespan and maturity

The firbolgs typically live to the age of 300, while it is documented that firbolgs are capable of reaching the age of 370. Firbolgs reach physical and ,typically, mental maturity at around the age of 30.

Firbolg Abilities

A firbolg’s physical strength is nothing to be scoffed at, but it is their innate magical abilities that are truly veritable. Firbolg possess the capability to detect magical auras, communicate with beasts and plants, change their appearance, and become invisible for short bursts.

Society

Firbolgs live within family-centered, clan-based societies. They live in natural settlements within the forests or remote hilly or otherwise remote terrain. Their settlement remain deeply hidden with that being their primary defense, though the firbolgs that are known to make their homes within caves and caverns transform their settlements into vertible fortresses. Firbolgs use their magic to ensure that their homes remain a secret to outsiders. These clan settlements are small, with between about four and forty members, often with a shaman or druid, and live separate from each other, with a few firbolg clans were nomadic.   As caretakers of the woods, the firbolgs carefully and resourcefully live off the land, making sure to ensure balance. During the summers, they store excess nuts, fruits, and berries, so that they could provide food to the forest animals during the winters. Although they do occasionally farm, it was only to supplement their diets; they prefer the lifestyle of gatherers.   Most firbolg tribes prefer isolation from other races, avoiding their politics and struggles. If intruders enter their territory, they typically attempt an indirect approach to force trespassers to leave firbolg territories—driving game away to discourage hunters or redirecting streams or forest trails to confuse parties. If these methods fail, the firbolgs then at last confront the outsiders. If the outsiders seem peaceful, the firbolgs would peacefully ask them to leave; if the outsiders seemed evil or seemed to have no concern for the forest lands, the firbolgs might mount a forceful attack. On occasion, firbolgs would trade with peaceful folk living nearby in exchange for providing services or goods.   Firbolg adventurers are rare and most often were individuals separated from their tribes—orphans, exiles, lone survivors, or the like, while a few began adventures to gain knowledge. Firbolgs seem to have a natural affinity toward druidic magics, with virtually all clans of firbolgs possessing at least one druid regardless of their size.

Homelands

The homelands of the firbolgs are the deep and primordial forests of Runetalras; chiefly the Elnurian Forest, although small clans and independent firbolgs can be found among the larger forests of the known world.

Firbolgs within the Kingdoms

Firbolgs rarely make their home within the kingdoms on man or the noble races, with it being far more common for them to make their home within the kingdoms of the wood elves, gnomes, and dryads.
