Selerimmond

The Selerimmond is the great forest under the protection of the moon elves of the Seleri.

Geography

From the Murkwing Coast in the west, the forest climbs rocky foothills before crumbling into the Basin of Mirrors, where gathering mist cloaks the twisting meadows and clearings, giving way to the spindly mountainous pillars that house the elven settlements. The northern and eastern edge of the Selerimmond climbs partway into the high, wintry ranges that themselves span their way along half of the continent.

Fauna & Flora

Boasting a number of exotic animal species, the cloudy forest of Selerimmond supports a thriving ecosystem across several different areas. The three main biospheres for the region are the southern coastal plains, the western marshes, and the central cloud forest basin, which can itself be divided into the forest and the meadows.   In the central basin, the forest floor is occupied largely by moss, ferns and flowering plants in the more heavily wooden parts, while the meadows are flush with vetiver grass and sedge. The understory of the basin's forest is quite dense, with mesquite, tea bush, wild pepper, cardamon and other spices, as well as taller palms and ferns competing with many trees attempting to reach the canopy. Canopy trees are not particularly diverse, with michela, magnolia, bushwillow, uriam, jambolan, buckthorn and banyan figs dominating the forest as a whole. Cedar trees are found only on and near the rocky pillars at the heart of the basin.   In the western marshes, similar plants grow, with broad flood rills separating each stretch of forest from the next. In the mud between, more herbaceous plants and spices grow, as well as haldina trees, liverwort, mosses, ferns and fungi. Green algae blooms seasonally in the marsh and along the coast.   In the southern coastal plains, the landscape is dotted with copses of arali flowers, glory lilies and hibiscus, and sedge varieties flourish in the rocky, moist soils and sands.   The fauna of the Selerimmond prowl their territory broadly. Small creatures such as civets, mice, lemurs, almiraj, capybara, ayeaye and monkeys subsist on what they can forage, as well as sloths, gaur, tahr, and elephants that forage the ground and understory. Predators such as the grey jackal, leopard and white tiger roam the forest, as well as the giant hunstman spider.   Native insects are many, including mosquitos, rotgrubs, many varieties of butterfly, moth and spider, as well as several types of bees and wasps, flies, earwigs, leeches and woodlice, and ant colonies in abundance. In the waters and moist places of the wood can be found jewel crabs, lungfish, spider crabs, treefrogs, toads, mundane salamanders, amphisbaena, venomous snakes, alligators, anaconda, turtles and the rare titanoboa.   Avian life is plentiful in the Selerimmond, from the white owls and golden condors that roost in the east, to the owls, laughing-thrush, blue shortwing, moonhens, woodgrouse, and countless songbirds of the basin, to the nightfishers, hoopoe, cranes, hornbills and plovers of the south and western fields and marshes. Wild doves are also found across the forest, the result of elven domestication of the species.

Natural Resources

Rich in natural resources, the Selerimmond is a valuable tract of land that the Seleri guard well.   Medicinal herbs and rare spices grow here, as well as tea and civet coffee. Exotic fruits and woods grow in abundance. Exotic animals thrive here, for pelt, bone, leather, trophy or trade. Deposits of crystals and minerals such as quartz, rock salt, jade, amethyst, iron, silver and opal are common. Seleri have created restorative pools of magical water in the basin, and store magic around the forest in hidden places for later use.
