Infinite War
The infinite war, eternal war, or planar war, is the name given to the struggle between Heaven and Hell. The origin of the war is a divisive subject between Heaven and Hell; check their pages to see each planes perspective on the history of the war.
For the most part, actual battle and warfare takes place mostly in Hell. There are a few battlefronts in Heaven and Rubicon, but there are vastly more fields of battle in Hell. Most battle efforts are to claim hold over cities, places where resources are abundant, or other pivotal points. When exploring Hell, you may find Heaven controlled cities or bastions, or you may stumble across an active warzone.
The majority of the war is handled in political affairs in Rubicon. The tug-of-war between Heaven and Hell over the devotion of rubiconians is centered around claiming souls from the inhabitants when they die. Each plane believes that, with enough soul power, they can wield enouigh magic to give them an edge in the war, creating a pseudo Cold War of souls between the planes. Each plane uses souls actively in war efforts as well as accumulating soul power for the next biggest spell or item that will push them over the edge of the war's stalemate.
It is important to note, most Rubiconians are NOT aware that the Infinite War even exists. They know that mortal wars between Rubiconian nations happen, but do not know of the greater planar level that these wars contribute to. Those that are wealthy and / or are from nations that have a greater presence in the War are more likely to know the truth, but this accounts for roughly 10% of the population of Rubicon at best.
Within the last several decades, a rumor has spread revolving around a powerful and ancient rubiconian artifact, the Athaneos, that may be able to truly cleanse someone of mortality. While there is little concrete evidence of this artifacts existence, the higher authorities in Heaven and Hell seem convinced that it is not only real, but that they have narrowed down where it may exist within Rubicon. This area, a slice of the infinite bounds of Rubicon, will be where the Rubicon part of the campaign takes place (keep in mind I have no clue how much of the campaign will be spent in Rubicon compared to the other planes without knowing character details, I assume Rubicon will take up the majority but I don't know for certain). This piece of Rubicon contains the most active warfare in Rubicon out of anywhere else in the plane, and has the highest density of Hell and Heaven's inhabitants that have been sent to Rubicon to carry out war efforts. Most rubiconians believe that the war is local between neighboring nations, but in truth most of these nations have alleigiances with Heaven or Hell and carry out war in their name. Several nations are undecided, and many who have decided keep their involvement a secret as long as they can.
Few nations on the local map support the Eternal War outright. Addolorata, Makami, Hiyami, and Ochny are the only nations that outright claim that they fight for the Eternal War.
Addolorata acts as the local primary force in Rubicon for Heaven in the Eternal War. Ochny and Sambal openly support Addolorata.
Makami acts as the local primary force in Rubicon for Hell in the Eternal War. Hiyami and Avra openly support Makami.
All other nations have claimed neutrality in the war. Sivellian, Uaithne, Trianta, and Paumérre know of the true nature of the Eternal War and make efforts to hinder the war on both sides.
