Valaari Sledship Vehicle in Rothelis | World Anvil

Valaari Sledship

Venturing through the valaari desert has always been a perilous journey and yet many souls try to cross the vast, hostile plain in order to bring goods to the eastern mountain settlements. In order to move significant amounts of goods to their destination, giant ship shaped contstructions on sleds proved to be a crucial tool. These vessels, known as valaari sledships, are crucial in keeping the population in the north-eastern mountains supplied and to transport the precious gems found in the mines of that region back to the capital city.   From start to finish it takes 5 to 7 years until one such cargo vehicle is built and consists of three main parts. The bottom part being the metal sled, upon which the rest of the cargo ship construction is placed and anchored in place. That metal sled is forged from strong and very durable metals, as to resist the constant movement over the coarse sand of the valaari desert. The ship part is modified a bit as to better accomodate for the extreme temperatures of the desert. To combat the extreme heat during the day, the ship is equipped with ventilation systems and a multi-level internal design. Food and other items that need constant cooling will be kept at the bottom during the day and then cycled upwards during the night, by turning the entire internal storage system through a system of gears and levers.   The mast, sails and a water destillation unit can be found at the very top of the vessel. The strong winds will usually prepel these ships to their destinations. however for the offchance of calm sands, every crew will have at least two magic users among their ranks to artificially create winds for the sails.   Other than the magic users, a crew typically consists of one or two mechanics, a cook, a captain, a first mate and several sailors who mostly deal with securing and organizing cargo.

You know a ship is important when it takes so many resources to build one. I like the idea of a ship on a sled. It reminds me of the sailships (if that's what they're called) from Shadow and Bone.
