Tent Town

Tent Town isn’t a place, exactly, or at least not a single place. It’s what locals call the pockets of tents, lean-tos, and shanties that appear and disappear through the district. Scattered along the southern edge of Drac's End, the ever-changing territory of Tent Town plays home to transients, sailors, goblinoids, the homeless, and the very poor. It’s also the focus of most of Drac's End’s criminal activities, a hideout for thieves and beggars, and a place where richer citizens can come to buy drugs, stolen goods, or information.   Many residents of Tent Town are sailors who abandoned their ships (or were released from employment), some now seeking a new berth or a different purpose in life. Some are drug dealers, thieves, smugglers, pirates, or others who are on the lam; they lie low here for a night or a fortnight, then move on before the authorities catch them. Other itinerants come from many walks of life: transients who came to Freeport, but then ran out of money; laborers doing their best to stay out of Scurvytown; people of the “savage races” who will not or cannot live in Bloodsalt; or anyone else down on their luck. A few rare souls choose to live a bohemian existence, but for the most part no one lives in Tent Town who doesn’t have to do so.   Crime is more common in Tent Town than anywhere else in Drac's End; it’s the frayed edge, where community and solidarity are weakest, or in some cases nonexistent. Tents are hard to protect, so thefts and robberies are common—not that many residents have much worth stealing. Fights over territory, food, or resources (or anything else, for that matter) are not too uncommon here, and the losers of such conflicts might have to pitch their tents elsewhere.
