Genbu meets the Tortoise and Serpent in the Red River
An old tale records the Tortoise General, or sometimes it is the Snake General, becoming a god. By studying of The Way of Kano, Genbu sought enlightenment and divine status. After a time, he came to realize that to do so, one must first purge all their sins from their body. Since he had eaten the good grains of the world all his life, his intestines and stomach were still very much mortal.
Genbu went to the second river of the world, the Red River. There, he washed his intestines and stomach and watched as his sins dissolved away as a black cloud in the waters. The darkness eventually formed a black tortoise and serpent that terrorized the land. Now divine, Genbu heard of this and returned to slay the monsters he had unleashed on the countryside. However, as the snake and tortoise showed remorse, he did not kill them but instead let them train under him to atone for their wrongdoings. They then became the Tortoise and Snake Warriors, and assisted Genbu with his quests
