Session 6

General Summary

The party sped off into the Barren Wastes, eager to evade pursuit and get as far away from the treachery of Littlebrook as they could. They headed south east and then skirted Eastward as they reached the edge of the desolation of the Wastes. Near to the capital, too near in fact, the party encountered a patrol of a local hobgoblin tribe. What was worrying was that these creatures carried the banner of The Demon Prince! They were easily dispatched by our heroes and then searched. In their loot the party found the severed head of a Knight of the Sun and his full armour. Deciding that out here survival was more important than ritual Tor altered the armour and strapped it on.   In the waste lands the group encountered hideous creature upon hideous creature. They fought a xorn, a medusa, manticores and a whole host of other evil nasties before they were attacked by a metalic plated huge bull like creature called a gorgon. The gorgon breathed a cloud of evil looking green vapours from its mouth and suddenly the elf, Flek, was turned to stone! The rest of the party rallied quickly and battered the gorgon to death. Unsure of how to proceed the group followed the trail the gorgon had left, finding a broken down and abandoned temple to an unknown god or goddess, long forgotten. In here they discovered the gorgon's nest and among it's treasure was a scroll containing a spell to restore stone to flesh. Lacking a wizard, the group gave the scroll to Traubon who had spent many years studying minor magic as it intrigued him. He tried to understand the spell but was seriously struggling with it. The party rested the night in the temple, determined to restore their friend to normality. In the morning Traubon looked at the scroll afresh and believed he understood how to pronounce the powerful symbols inscribed on it. Lady Fortuna called upon the blessing of Pelor to aid the casting and Traubon read from the scroll. With a bright flash of eldritch light Flek's body was returned to normality! He thanked the party and spent the rest of the day recovering.   Heading onwards the group encountered a few more evil and nasty creatures, finally being ambushed by a monstrous spider fully 40 feet in diameter! This colossal creature's venom was enough to stagger even our great and powerful heroes and the fight was a close one. Eventually the heroes overcame it but Lady Fortuna and Tor had been so badly weakened they guessed it would take a fortnight to recover. Given the dangerous nature of the wastes the party decided they could not go on or back in this state and so they dug deep into the spider's massive lair and prepared to wait out a fortnight. They figured, correctly, that not much would live around the lair of such a powerful predator. During the fortnight they did have one encounter with another massive, though slightly smaller spider, but they were well prepared for this one and killed it easily.   Nine days into the Barren Wastes and nearly a month after setting out from Littlebrook the party came to the site of the fabled Tomb of Callindrill. They were seriously unimpressed. Expecting a big palatial affair, the entrance to the tomb was nothing more than a broken in opening in a sand dune. Strange pictorial writings on the walls declared this to be the tomb that they were looking for though so they cautiously entered. The entrance chamber was covered with these pictographs that Traubon identified as describing the early life of Callindrill. The chamber also housed two huge clay statues, one of which was shattered and surrounded by the rotting corpses of 5 warriors. As the party stepped into the chamber the remaining statue animated and attacked the group. They soon found that their swords and arrows would not effect it. Only the bludgeoning fists of Kai and a mace picked up off the fallen warriors seemed to have any effect. In the hands of Tor the Barbarian a wet flannel would be an effective weapon however and the statue was soon crushed and broken.   Searching the room revealed an area of bricked up masonry without any obvious catches to open it. Resorting to violence the group decided to batter their way in. It took some time but with the aid of the obviously magical mace they had just found Tor was eventually able to bash his way through to a further chamber. Cautiously proceeding the party made their way into this new, larger chamber. Inside the roof was supported by five ceiling high columns embedded with gems. Approaching the central column Traubon was suddenly attacked as the thing lashed forward and tried to engulf him! His quick reactions saved the day though and he rolled to the side. Instantly the party were with him and the strange creature was slain. The party searched the room, deciding to leave any valuables behind and found another bricked up mortar like wall at the back.   Before beginning to break down this wall they decided to heal up from the damage the clay statue had inflicted. They found to their dismay that the damage could not be healed!!! Quite worried about their current health they pondered their next move...
