Runelore Language in Rivendom | World Anvil

Runelore

Runelore pertains to the written language of runes once used by the Titans that are eternally shackled to the Burdensome City of Gelethis. Though remnants of the language are scattered across the Frostmere, efforts to reconstruct it have so far been largely unsuccessful.   Runes are more than just a means of conveying concepts and ideas in a written form. On some level, runes embody the very concepts that they represent. For instance, when infused with magic and guided by a strong force of will, the rune for fire can be made to produce flames. More adept students of runelore are able to not just manifest the surface-level meaning of each rune, they can also utilize deeper meanings and connotations. In the case of the rune of fire, an adept of runelore can manifest literal flames, but they might also be able to use it to inflame passions or otherwise impart qualities often associated with fire.   Modern runelore is comprised of a handful of roots and an almost-uncountable number of derivative runes. Roots are runes salvaged from the ruins of the Titans' civilization and understood well enough to be used to manifest their magic. Derivative runes, on the other hand, are manmade runes based off of the roots and used to represent a broader spread of ideas and concepts. They are useful to practitioners of rune magic but are almost invariably less potent than roots.   Significant efforts are underway to not just uncover more roots that can be used to refine and improve existing derivative runes, but also to crack the mysteries of roots that have been uncovered but still defy understanding. It is widely believed, however, that it is all but impossible to recreate runelore as the Titans knew it.
