Reýlë

Rêýlë (sing. reýlë; Tre. /ɾɛ.jɪ.ˈlɛ/) are a class of Dominion warships that are deployed as capital ships for the Dominion naval forces, able to carry a sizable contingent of troops in addition to its crew, as well as an enormous amount of cargo. Though considered inferior to the capital ships deployed by the Silvered Realm, rêýlë have nevertheless contributed significantly to the Dominion's continued dominance over the world's oceans, securing trading lanes against elledyn'ni raiders and other bad actors on the high seas.

Propulsion

Rêýlë are propelled by numerous sails affixed to five masts in total that run along their lengths, lending each ship a total sail area of approximately 60000 square feet. Though the Dominion is generally opposed to the use of arcane magic, each Rêýlë has, as part of its crew, at least ten sylvari wavemasters and wavemistresses who ensure that the vessel remains moving even when the wind is unfavorable. These sylvari occupy other roles on the ship when they are not needed for its propulsion.

Weapons & Armament

Early rêýlë were mounted with heavy arbalests on their top deck, as well as on lower levels along the sides of the ship. Fired in unison, the hail of crossbow bolts could easily eviscerate smaller ships and deal significant damage to comparably-sized ships at close range, though accuracy left much to be desired. Rêýlë crews are trained in boarding hostile vessels, and the prow of the ship itself is reinforced with steel in order to facilitate ramming other ships.

Armor and defense

As rêýlë are of such a formidable size, the Dominion is unable to build them out of normal wood. A special variety of tree, called Ironwood, is used in the construction of rêýlë. Ironwood is specially cultivated by druids and is often "sung" into shape. Ironwood, as the name might suggest, is harder and more unyielding than most other tree species. This owes to the incorporation of iron into its structure, which not only strengthens the wood, but also serves a secondary purpose of rendering it resistant to arcane magic.
