Ice breakers

Linnadeigh's Joint Ice Breaker Fleet operates 87 offshore ice breakers, six of them working throughout the year purely to keep the Rimeway Estuary clear of ice. The vessels are divided into four broad categories based on size and intended use:
  • O - Open Ocean: The oceanic icebreakers are large and powerful, with a minimum ice class of P4. They are all capable of working year-round in Voralar's polar waters. Min 10,000 GT. (16 vessels)
  • S - Sea: Intended for work in open sea but without needing to take old ice inclusions into consideration, S-rated breakers are classed at least PC7 or C2. They are capable of working year-round in all seas outside the polar regions, with PC 7 or above breakers having limited working ability in polar regions in summer. Min 5,000 GT. (29 vessels)
  • L - Littoral: L-rated icebreakers are classed at least C5, and are capable of operating in first-year ice within all non-Polar Linnadean territorial waters. Min 500 GT. (42 vessels)
  • R - Riverine: The small R-rated icebreakers number over a hundred and are tasked with keeping Linnadeigh's rivers and canals navigable. They vary greatly in size and design, often being custom-made for their area of operation. Typically 5-50 GT. (109 vessels)
The icebreakers are operated - and generally owned - by the Joint Ice Breaker Fleet, headquartered at Glacier Dock in Rimeport and led by Rear Admiral Valkil Evinrude. The JIBF is administratively part of the Linnadeigh Coastguard, which authorises the commission of the vessels. Their crews are nominally catalogued as part of the Linnadean Navy, but are more closely associated with the Ancient and Imperial Order of Glaciators and Bergwranglers. Crewmen are seen as bergwranglers to the day they die, regardless of their future career choices.
