Molly Faris met Gavin Blake when he visited the tavern she worked and sang at in her hometown. Running away from family trauma, she followed him to the port city of Cliffbreak, where she sang in a local tavern and helped manage the associated inn, while Gavin took Guide jobs for hunters who came to Cliffbreak to seek out the bears, wolves, and caribou in the Eastern Pass beyond the city.
When Molly became pregnant with Rory, Gavin decided to take the whole family to the city of Rime, where he hoped their child could grow up free to use her magic.
