Naumkeag Assault Tank

DESCRIPTION

The Naumkeag Assault Tank is a one-off vehicle, produced by Naumkeag Motor Works at the behest of the Arano Family. After the death of Shurik Arano in the Battle of Tukayiid and the destruction of his beloved Behemoth tank "Battle Brick," it was decided that a new vehicle would be commissioned in his honor.
The project was initially meant to be for the commissioning and modification of a new Behemoth-class assault tank, financed by Cassandra Furse and Sasha Arano, but the planned budget was rapidly exceeded when word spread and donations began to pour in from the armored forces of the Riesenjager Mercenary Company, what remained of the extended Arano royal family, and veterans of the Aurigan Civil War. With a nearly-quadrupled budget of available funds for the project, it was decided that a vehicle would be designed from the ground up instead, sparing no expense in systems and equipment to bring Shurik's vision of the perfect assault tank to its logical - and gloriously overengineered - conclusion.
The vehicle would be completed in late 3058, only weeks before select members of the Risenjagers would ship out to participate in Operation Bird Dog and Operation Bulldog. There it would undergo its trial by fire, racking up an impressive kill count and proving itself a true successor to the man whos life - and death - created it.

WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT

Much like its inspiration, the "Arano's Revenge" carries a fearsome compliment of weaponry into battle. The main armament consists of a pair of Clan-salvaged Thunderstroke Series 2B Gauss Rifles pulled from the remains of the same Stone Rhino that Shurik had duelled (and bested) on Tukayiid, mounted in the turret alongside two additional salvaged ExoStar Pinnacle ER Medium Lasers and a single Sperry Browning machine gun. Supporting these weapons are two additional machine guns and a trio of Shannon Ten-Pin MRM-10 launchers. Clan-salvaged CASE, an Inner Sphere produced Guardian ECM suite, and an Anti-Missile System round out the tank's equipment, while a staggering 21.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor guard the vehicle from even the heaviest barrages. The enormous vehicle manages to pack all of this, and remain at speeds comparable to the Charybdis MkI, through the use of an extralight fusion engine.

VARIANTS

3065 Refit:
Upon its return to the Inner Sphere after Operations BIRD DOG and BULLDOG, the Arano's Revenge was put into immediate refits. Lackluster performance of the MRM-10 launchers during the operation saw them removed from the hull and replaced with a pair of captured Clan LRM-15s. The turret weaponry remained in place, as much for the symbolic gesture of using war trophies from Shurik's greatest kill as it was for the raw firepower the Clan tech guns provided; they were, however, joined by a whopping quintuplet of Rocket Launcher 10s for additional close-range firepower. The tonnage for these additional weapons was acquired by cladding the vehicle in salvaged Clan Ferro-Fibrous armor, saving 1.5 tons on the overall weight without sacrificing any protection.
The vehicle retains the CASE, Guardian ECM, and Anti-Missile System of the original design, while the new LRM15s are fed by 5 tons of ammunition. Two tons of this are allocated to smoke and thunder munitions, allowing the "Arano's Revenge" to deploy smokescreens and minefields as-needed to control the flow of the battle. BV: 2,819

Naumkeag Support Tank:
"Nothing goes to waste in the Periphery."
When the Naumkeag Assault Tank completed production, it left behind a large number of specialized tools and equipment that Naumkeag Motor Works had needed to purchase - or create - to accomplish the vehicle's construction. Only months after the "Arano's Revenge" had left the Periphery to participate in the raid on the Clans, designs for a new vehicle were already well under way in NMW. To keep costs down (and hopefully make a more attractive vehicle for export) NMW was determined to use as many off-the-shelf and locally sourced components as possible; the body and turret of the vehicle itself would be produced in-house using the N.A.T's tooling, while the vast majority of the remaining parts were sourced from leftover stocks of its Scylla MkI Heavy Tank MkI and MkI-M production.
The resulting vehicle was named the Naumkeag Support Tank, though test crews rapidly began calling it the "Nasty" in allusion to both its decidedly lackluster mobility and the effect it could produce on targets downrange. A 200-rated fusion engine barely managed to keep the tank moving at 40 kph, although it still mounts a respectable 16 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor. This low speed, while it meant that the vehicle could not keep up with its lancemates, was not seen as a detriment by NMW's designers; the tank is meant to act as a mobile bunker and battlefield shaper, and can easily take the place of two Scylla MkIIs in a lance for fire support.
To this end, the N.S.T. was equipped with a fearsome array of long-range firepower and support equipment. The tank's entire armament consists of a quartet of Delta Dart LRM-15s, turret-mounted alongside an ER Large Laser. Ten tons of CASE-protected ammunition allows for a staggering variety of special munitions to be loaded without sacrificing overall raw firepower, and an Anti-Missile System in the turret ensures that any counter-battery fire is minimized. A bulldozer blade on the front hull allows the vehicle to dig fighting positons for itself and its lancemates, while Vehicular Grenade Launchers on each facing provide anti-infantry firepower or smokescreens as needed for the vehicle to reposition. Perhaps its most unique equipment, however, are the trio of Mine Dispensers mounted to the rear of the vehicle; while situational in potential usage, they can make for an exceptionally unpleasant surprise for any enemy force thinking to run down the "Nasty" and its lancemates on a retreat.
As of 3065, only three Naumkeag Support Tanks have managed to be built; dubbed the "Periphery Rain," "FAFO," and "Mail Call," they have proven to be widely popular with the crews and lances assigned to them. The most notable feedback has been from the crews and technicians alike; the "Nasties" have a significant amount of legroom and crew comforts compared to most combat vehicles, while the technicians have praised the ease of maintenance and the design's quick-remove reactor housing. Whether this was a happy accident, or intentional plan for ease of future upgrades on NMW's part, remains to be seen. BV: 1601
