Naumkeag Motor Works

Naumkeag Motor Works (NWM) is a subsidiary of Aurigan Defense Industries, focusing largely on combat vehicles for the Aurigan Coalition Military, Aurigan Royal Guard, and Riesenjager Mercenary Company. Their civilian branch, under the name Naumkeag Motor Works - Industrial (NWM-I) produces a variety of vehicles and equipment for Aspero-Dinton Mining and other regional companies.   Their headquarters and manufacturing plants are located within a sprawling complex on the outskirts of Andover, abutting both the Andover Spaceport and The Castle. It is one of the largest single employers on Naumkeag, and is well-regarded for both the quality of its products as well as its generous benefits - despite its rather convoluted (and at times controversial) past.

  • History

2950 - Naumkeag Motor Works is founded as a subsidiary of Aspero-Dinton Mining, producting industrial vehicles for the company's efforts on Mechdur following the creation of the Aurigan Coalition   2995 - Naumkeag finally becomes an official part of the nascent Aurigan Coalition, falling under the governance of House Espinosa. The new government invests heavily into NMW, expanding their production capabilities significantly.   2998 - Aspero-Dinton Mining loses majority shareholder control over NMW in a surprise takeover by NMW's board of directors themselves. Rumors swirl that House Espinosa played a part in the coup.   3005 - NMW shifts some of their production lines to military usage, manufacturing Sleipnir and Vargr APCs for export to the Aurigan Coalition and other regional powers.   3020 - NMW acquires two Demolisher production lines as a direct investment from House Espinosa, and begin producing the vehicles for the House's security forces.   3022 - The Aurigan Coalition is overthrown by House Espinosa, and the Aurigan Directorate is formed in what would become the beginning of the Restoration War. NMW ceases all civilian production and focuses entirely on its tank and APC production lines, converting the indistrual vehicle manufacturing to ammunition production.   3025 - The first shots are officially fired in the Restoration War when Lady Kamea Arano returns from hiding in the Magistry of Canopus, rallying the myriad opposition forces under her banner. Over the course of the year the Aurigan Restoration forces blitz through the worlds of the Aurigan Directorate. Restoration forces invade Naumkeag early on in the war; NMW is heavily damaged in the fighting, its board of directors are arrested alongside every House Espinosa employee. The company and world alike are placed under military stewerdship for the remainder of the war.
3026 - The Restoration War ends in a crushing defeat for House Espinosa. Andover Province is ceded as a landhold to the Risenjager Mercenary Company as payment for their assistance in the Restoration War. Rumors begin to swirl that Kamea's distant cousin Shurik Arano had lobbied for the company's grant of Andover Province as a means of exacting some form of revenge upon House Espinosa, and plans to dissolve what remains of NMW.   3027 - In an unexpected twist the provisonal government of Naumkeag pardons most of the members of NMW previously arrested, and allocates a significant amount of funds to be put towards the repair and refurbishment of NMW's manufacturing plant. At the same time, the company receives a massive influx of new employees; largely Restoration Armored Forces veterans, this infusion of personnel proves to be a significant bottleneck in the company's attempts to repair both their financial state and their public image. The ongoing efforts of Operation RESTORED HOPE aggravate the problem, even after its eventual success and the destruction of Forever Vigilant and Ibex Rampant; the company begins to flounder as profits plummet and the new board fails to come to an agreement on the future of NMW. This is made worse in late 3027 when a series of accidents cripple the manufacturing plant, culminating in a fire in the munitions factory that destroys the production lines and narrowly avoids flattening the entire complex. Accusations of sabotage run thick, almost 30% of the company is handed pink slips, and the entire security detail of NMW is fired and replaced with RJMC troops on temporary (later permanent) contract.   3028 - NMW's APC lines are finally repaired and brought back into limited-scale manufacture towards the end of the year; however, delays and issues in production continue to drag the company closer and closer to bankruptcy. Only a last-minute investment from the RJMC prevents the company from going under completely, and NMW slowly begins to increase production over the next few years. Despite this, the company's profits continue to show lackluster output and the board of directors begins to argue over the direction that the company should take.   3031 - The loggerheads within the company are eventually broken by the direct involvement of the RJMC and Shurik Arano, who negotiate an agreement with the board; helped in large part by the allure of a massive contract potential with the new Aurigan governent, and the threat of the board's outright dissolution. Naumkeag Motor Works is moved under the umbrella of Aurigan Defense Industries as part of the Aurigan Reach's efforts to centralize military production, in exchange for exclusive rights to produce the planned Scylla MkI Heavy Tank and Charybdis MkI Assault Tank for the RJMC and the Royal Guard. NMW's debts are directly subsidized by the Aurigan Government while their Demolisher manufacturing facilities are rebuilt and new tooling is brought in for the two planned Scylla production lines.   3045 - After over a decade of modernization, prototypes, and field trials, the first Scylla and Charybdis tanks roll off the production line. While only ever limited production runs of each - largely due to their exclusivity rights, the logistics involved in the import of several crucial parts of the design, and the contractually limited customer base until the early 3060's - the designs are wildly successful and help keep the company comfortably in the green for decades. NMW would later expand into a number of other products, ranging from the industrial vehicles they had started with back in 2950 all the way to licensed production of Hunter LSTs and Scorpions for the Arugan Coalition Military.   3058 - In a joint partnership with Aurigan Defense Industries and based on technical specifications put forward by the RJMC, NMW releases their first in-house Battlemech; the Valke Recon BattleMech, a refit of the Capellan Raven designed as a UAV carrier. Production is slow at their Wocester plant due to the difficulties involved in importing parts from the Capellan Confederation, but the company still sees decent growth after it sells the technical package to Aurigan Defense Industries and Hellespont Industrial.
