Saku
Saku is the fortified city deep in the Senchineru Forest. Massive trees stand as silent sentinals around the city. The Major Houses of Saku have made these massive trees their homes. Minor Houses make due with smaller residences. Houses can rise or fall on their progeny's fortunes. The most powerful house is Asugval as the current General of the Gundan of Sakuis General Yoneda Asugval.
Saiban is the yearly ritual in Saku where the young people of Saku can prove themselves. Those who do well are offered posts in the Gundan. The winner of the Saiban becomes an officer in the Gundan and a year long apprenticeship with the General. The Saiban is also an opportunity for Minor Houses to move up and for houseless families to gain notoriety.
Saku is home to the famous Oshiru. A renowned university with emphasis in scholarship, crafting, and combat. It's main rival is the Institute. The main leaders of the Oshiru covet the The Library at Heim and are trying to build up their own library.
Guilds and Factions
The most elite of Skuran society belong to the Branches. These are prestigious families that have long histories of leaders, artisans, and craftspeople that have increased the prosperity of Saku. Each Branch vies for power with each other, maneuvering for power and influence. The Saiban plays heavily into this, where the children of each Branch is placed into the Gundan based on their performance. As such, the Branches heavily invest in the education, physical training, and mental toughness of their children. The burden is extreme and the children heavily monitored their whole lives. All actions are for the glory of the Branch, useless children that fail to place well in the Saiban are seen as shameful. If a child fails to meet the expectations of their Branch, they are often ostracized or go missing entirely.
