Spirit Sage

Qualifications

Once selected, a candidate must receive the blessings of the Cardinal Spirits. Once obtaining the spirits' blessings, the candidate must gain the blessing of Rakshi herself.

Requirements

When there is an opening (usually due to a sage's death), the sages convene and select a candidate from among the Shugenja. The candidate must have strong evidence of being closely related to the goddess Rakshi, among other unknown qualities.

Appointment

The current spirit sages perform a special ritual to induct a new sage into their order.

Duties

Spirit sages have the same basic duties as any Shugenja does, but they are also responsible for the spiritual well-being of the entire land.

Responsibilities

The spirit sages are the Shugenja in charge of the seven Shinri Grand Shrines.

Benefits

Spirit sages hold much religious and political power, which means they never want for material wealth. Additionally, when the Emperor dies, the new Emperor is chosen from among the seven sages.

Cultural Significance

Outside of the Emperor of the Eternal Sun, the spirit sages are the most direct connection that the people have to the Cardinal Spirits and the Goddess Rakshi.
