Declaration of Sovereignty over Drakeveinae

Written by Occasional Anvilite

FROM THE FILES OF ARCHBISHOP FERDINAND 657 OER
In a move that shocked the world, the Holy Church annexed Drakeveinae and immediately, despite the documents statements, followed this with extreme force. Every member of government, every official, who opposed the Church was found murdered, in all cases brutally. The only regiment in the capital at the time, the Ashen Sparrows, were all but destroyed by a deadly fire, leaving no-one to stop the assasins. The country fell to chaos within hours, riots and minor rebellions upsetting the rule of order everywhere. Then, innocent as a child, the Church asked if the locals wanted them to step in. Any educated mind can follow what happens from there, and within days there was a military government in place.
"Drivel. Utter drivel. If I wanted to see a load of manure I would have stayed at the farm, not read a newspaper."
  • A Drakeveinaen resident. Shortly afterwards he was escorted away by an Inquisitor.

  • Purpose

The purpose of the document is to annex and control the nation of Drakeveinae. Its creation was prompted by rising discontent among the clergy at the state if their lands, and the lack of action in the Church.

    Document Structure

    Clauses

A beginning preamble outlines the purpose and gives a few opening comments, and then moves on to an outline of how the decision was decided, and the results of the vote which passed it. Then it lists the goals of the Church on this matter, before finishing with a conclusion and a list of a few of the signatories.

    Historical Details

    Background

Inside the Church, there was a growing anxiety at this point that the Church was taking no decisive action, despite the circumstances being prime for the taking of another vassal nation. The Arcimandrite Council decided that the best way to remove the aforementioned atmosphere was to take Drakeveinae. He had the International Commitee draw up the document, and then forced the vote through both committees with subtle application of both carrot and stick. This has had them hailed for their great efficiency and skill at these matters, and given them yet more power.

    Public Reaction

The public of Drakeveinae were very angry, and rightly so. In just a page or so of legal drivel, their entire proud nation was to be reduced to merely yet another Church lacky. In Alnaryon, citizens were unsure how to react. On the one hand, many felt a little sympathy for the Drakeveinaens, as they knew what it was like to be a Church nation. On the other hand, they knew the consequences of taking objection to it. In most other nations, reaction is mostly disbelief and anger, or, in a few cases, celebration, as Drakeveinaen in not much liked among the northern nations.

    Newspaper Coverage
"This is a dark day for history." So spoke General Kairn Blackblade this afternoon, upon hearing the news that Drakeveinae had been annexed by the Church, and we at this newspaper heartily agree! The evil Churchies marched into Drakeveinae this afternoon and set about dismantling the goverment of good old Lord Fang, who is now missing, presumed dead. This publication calls for immediate millitary action, not diplomatic dilly dallying from bumbling busybodies. March for Drakeveinae!
The Daily Republican, a far right Veridian newspaper.
Rejoice, our great masters have arrived, storming the grim castle of the evil Fang. Great new laws have been enacted, and we are now free from the tyrrany of the awful autocracy that has held power for so much longer than it should have. From now on, we can have no fear for ourselves. Beyond our borders, a storm is brewing amongst the treacherous foreigners, but here at home we know that this is the best thing that has happened in the last decade or more! On an unrelated note, all citizens are to report to their nearest goverment office for registration under the new religious monitoring scheme.

A new era has begun in Drakeveinae, bringing with it more of the darkness that is ubitiquous in this dismal age we live in. At 10:00 last night the Most Holy and Radiant Church of the Light annexed the Republic of Drakeveinae, and declared Sovereignty over it and it's territories. It has been officially denied by the Church, but sources say that they have assassinated most of the liberal elements of the goverment, and that Lord Fang was publicly executed this morning. There was resistance from the population and riots have broken out in the capital. Our Drakeveinae correspondent was evacuated early in the morning today, but from what he told us, we can only assume riots are still ongoing.

    Legacy

This document will have incredible, unforeseeable, repercussions and legacy for the people of Drakeveinae and the world at large.

    Term

The Church has set no time limit on the occupation, citing concerns for the wellbeing of the people of Drakeveinae, but, if the several other nations annexed in this same way are anything to go by, it is likely to continue indefinitely. Several states are calling for millitary action, but it is unlikely they could free the country from the Church's iron grip. There is, however, the possibility of the Republic created by the armies of Drakeveinae, who have now broken away from the goverment on ethical reasons, will separate from Church-held Drakeveinae and become a new nation. If this happens, it seems likely that much of the population will attempt to flee to this new Republic, which may put pressure on the Church to leave Drakeveinae, as, without the workers who power it, the nation is almost useless to the Church, who are claiming it mostly for economic reasons, alongside political, despite their humanitarian pretence.
