Relationships
In Renereach, there is no binding point of a relationship that one might call 'marriage'. Some groups or individuals may hold personal rituals or events to represent their connection to another, but there's no standardised idea of it, nor would this convey any benefits from a social or legal perspective. People may use visual cues to represent a connection to another, such as a piece of jewelery they wear, or matching tattoos, or a piece of another's hair braided into theirs. Individual relationships may have differing views and expectations on commitment, what constitutes fidelity, and what they expect of the other(s) involved.
In terms of how surnames work with this, refer to Naming Conventions.
This does not mean relationships are nonexistant - they otherwise work mostly as you might expect.
Some locations may have more specific structures of points within a relationship - perhaps making a distinction between 'dating' and 'partner', for example, whereas other locations generally consider a relationship to be simply that, a relationship, with the expectation of it's depth being decided by those within it.
There is no historical precedent for homophobia or related issues, and as such there is rarely a problem expressed with same-sex relationships - they are considered completely normal. However, there is a cultural focus in Renereach on having many children, likely due to historically having to revitalise the population after the Cataclysm, so same-sex relationships may have more expectation placed on them to have children via other means (adoption, surrogacy, etc) than they otherwise would. Likewise, they are discouraged in royal families that wish to continue a particular bloodline directly, and among certain followers of Qualei to an extent, many of whom are also interested in maintaining a lineage, though the idea of this varies between groups. But this is not a concern of the general population.
Polyamory is likewise fairly accepted - Ayabe'en, as a race, have a culture of polyamory and it is entirely expected among them, at least those raised amongst their major cultural groups. It is less common across the rest of Renereach, but still a fairly open possibility. It is not the norm, but few would look sideways at a relationship containing more than two.
