Voidmage

(click here to return to Character Creation)
Masters of the eldritch energies of the Hallownestian Void, voidmages are the product of the Voidmage Academy, a magical university founded in Darkhome in a potential future by Knight and Ngel Sfet.

Disciplines

Voidmages are largely split into two schools and specializations, each taking after one of the founders of the school. The Voidcasters are evokers in Ngel Sfet's image, blasting their enemies with powerful Void-based spells from range to make up for their relative physical fragility. Voidcasters are traditionally pure casters, as their effectiveness depends directly on the power of the spells they have available. The Voidshifters, in contrast, are physical fighters, using their transmutation-focused magic to enhance their personal combat ability in imitation of Knight. Most Voidshifters are crosstrained as warriors or martial artists, and many are Sentries or other soldiers who came to the academy to broaden their capabilities.   Voidmages have particular clothing styles and markings that signify their training and specialties. Voidcasters traditionally wear black masks and black robes with white accents, while Voidshifters wear the inverse. All voidmages include a set of narrow eyespot markings on their masks: For voidcasters, these markings are white, with one pair above the eyeholes, one below, and one set wider on the temples at eye level. For voidshifters, the markings are black and only the pairs above and below the eyeholes are included. These markings evoke the image of the six-eyed Lord of Shades. Students with more than one pair of eyes typically adjust the number and placement of the eyespots accordingly, though at least one pair of eyespots is always included.

Methodology

By calling on the nature of the Void in accordance with sympathetic arcane runes of power a voidmage casts spells alike to, yet not quite the same as a typical arcane wizard or practitioner of magic. Memorization times and most Vancian mechanics are maintained as regards to spell level and interaction with other effects. Most spells of this unique school have side effects, causing unease, fear and trepidation, often causing darkness/shadow/psychic/slashing or piercing damage in addition to hampering or restricting the target. Spells of normal arcane nature (standard wizard spells) can be translated into Void magic spells and the reverse is also possible at a quarter the time it would take to research the spell. However, translated Void spells may lose their side effects to a degree as a normal caster does not have the same practiced nature in dealing with the dark dream energies normally involved in the spells, and a voidmage using translated spells may experience different sum total effects with translated spells as they become ‘shifted’ by the employment of different energy sources and understanding of magic.   The main drawback of Void magic is in a lack of fidelity with illusions, as the telltale signs of Void magic can be a giveaway, and dealing with sources of energy far removed from the prime tend not to work as well or with TRAGIC repercussions. (Elemental spells tend to have their main element focus limited or changed to one associated with Void magic. Gate and other similar magics used to access outer planes are somewhat forbidden and it's recommended that voidmages avoid attempting such at all costs). Magics involving darkness, negative mental effects, shadows and dreams are typically very much within the purview of the voidmage, and opponents suffer a penalty to save vs spells against these types of effects when cast by one as they would against a wizard specialist.
