Carlsby
A deceased human merchant with a fine mustache and a history of more greed than morals.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
A bow-legged balding older man with a good mustache and a bit of a gut. His clothes are a mix of pirate and trader, including a nice shirt and a greyish floppy hat that's halfway between musketeer and tricorn. He wears a scimitar on his belt.
Special abilities
Carlsby says that he is not undead. He's dead. As part of the fact that he isn't even supposed to be on the Material Plane, the very wrongness of it warps things around him. The aura has been known to have deleterious effects on the living. Unfortunately for him, his state also means he can't leave the spot in the underground stream where he is bound.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Carlsby was an unscrupulous trader in life. That life ended sometime before the Kingdom of Kaelund conquered Kierst Isle, when the isle was still a pirate haven. Carlsby and his crew were engaged in some shady business, and they were betrayed and killed by Zen Hwan, "the Decapitator", who then took Carlsby's treasure. Carlsby found himself bound to the old cave where he died as a strange sort of ghost, not truly undead but still unable to move on until his treasure was returned to him. There he stayed, regretting his folly, as the world moved on.
He watched as Zen Hwan met his own fate, becoming bound to the same cave system alongside his crew as the necromantic energy of the place raised them as undead. He watched as the Animus Society moved in, and was bound to secrecy by their mages. And in February of 24 ARL, he did more than watch as a party of adventurers came to hunt those same mages, and offered him the chance to get his treasure back.
Morality & Philosophy
In life, in his own words, Carlsby was "a greedy merchant, whose lust for gold caused him to lose everything he actually should have cared about." He has since had much cause and time to rethink his life. While his priority is still the retrieval of his treasure, since that is what is keeping him bound to the Material Plane, he is forthcoming and helpful to those who treat with him well.
