Kingdom of Iri
Great and ancient are our traditions. We were guided by Kor in the First Age, and have made our home upon these islands. It is known that these lands and waters were the first of all creation. In that way our Kingdom is a steward for the most ancient and sacred of all lands. Time and again the children of Yeno and Ashtyr have come to show us a better way, or to challenge our truths. They have failed. Kor is our guide and protector. Come in peace to the Kingdom, or glimpse the true wrath of the elder god.
- King Silverscale IV
Structure
A monarch rules the islands officially. They are considered the head of state and hold the position for 20 years or until death. The monarch is replaced by the first hero that returns from the Temple of Challenges. The monarch is the head of the military and the final arbiter in cases of treason.
Most legislation goes through the Island Council, made up of representatives from each island.
The Circle of Great Kor also holds power in the government, acting as the official church in many ways.
Culture
There are two faces to the culture of the Iri Islands. There is the public side that emphasizes the relaxation, pleasure and exoticism of the islands. They are a place to unwind and have fun. They are a place of delicacies and decadence. They are the islands of pleasure and distraction. Everyone is happy and everyone is hospitable.
Then there is the other side. The Kingdom protects its people, keeps them fed, productive and safe. While tourism brings in plenty of money, they also ensure they have plenty food grown locally as well as fresh water stored. They ensure their navy is the best in the world. They ensure that no subterfuge attempts to wrest power away from the people of Kor. This is their last sanctuary, and they will not give an inch of it over.
This duel cultural view can cause whiplash for visitors who find themselves on the wrong side of the law if their vacation strays a bit too far off the proscribed path.
Public Agenda
The Iri Islands are the vacation spot of Cadash. They are welcoming. They are warm. They have the best food, the best entertainment and the best deals. They will give you a time you will never forget, no matter what you seek to unwind. All are welcome, just make sure you have some coin to spend, because there will be rare wonders and experiences you will find no where else.
Assets
The main asset is the image of the islands as the destination for relaxation for those with the coin. This reputation makes the Iri Islands a desirable get away location. In addition the islands provide plenty of fruit, fish, and birds for export. Local artisans are masters of woodworking and jewelry making (using coral, obsidian and bone). The Kingdom's navy has a reputation for being swift, well trained and deadly in combat.
History
it is said the traditions of the Kingdom go back to the First Age, when only Kor, his children and the The Great Wyrms lived upon Cadash. The Iri Islands are said to be the first bits of land that Kor created, and so the kingdom is the oldest surviving power structure in the world.
It was Kor who told his people to use the Temple of Challenges to determine who would lead them. The temple has been kept by the Order of Challenges since that time, and all the monarchs have been ones who emerged from the temple.
The Kingdom has remained united and strong through the eons. Hospitality is something Kor insisted on and so visitors are never turned away. But they must treat others as they wish to be treated or else they are punished. It has always been the way of the Kingdom.
As the elf and human empires rose and fell, the Kingdom has continued on as it always has. When one of the empires decides to wrest the islands away, they find people more than capable of fighting back.
Major historical events occurring on the islands are not known to most folk who don't live there. Even The Cataclysm seemed to do little to change the course of events on the islands. Yes some volcanos erupted and there were tsunami's. But a few years later and it was as if nothing happened.
It is said that elder elves return to these islands, and they find the village life is nearly unchanged from when they first visited hundreds of years ago. It is a testament to the people and their strong ties to the ways of Kor.
Demography and Population
Most of the peoples of the Iri Islands are First Folk. The islands are populated by a wide variety of the folk, with some not seen on the mainland like the Hawkfolk and Ratfolk. They tend to live in groups not bound by type and work well together.
Some humans and elves have made a home in the Iri islands, and they are usually working in the tourist industry. While they are treated well enough, it is obvious that none of Yeno's or Ashtyr's folk are in any part of government.
Foreign Relations
The Kingdom of Iri is very protective of their lands and legacy. As such they present two very different faces to the world. They are known as a welcoming paradise for pleasure and play. They are also known for fearlessly pushing back against any attempt to wrest control (political or military) of their islands and waters from them. The ancient Tyrian Navy was nearly destroyed when it attempted to conquer the islands pre-cataclysm. The Guild Islands find themselves constantly thwarted with their subterfuge and plotting against their neighbors. The Kingdom trades with the Confederation of Ithan and makes huge amounts of coin from entertaining their wealthy guildsmen and women. But they also find the guild's way of handling things unsavory.
The Kingdom also turns a blind eye to privateers using their waters and makes no bones about it. The Guild has been outraged many times that obviously Iri built ships raid their vessels. But the superior Iri navy keeps them from doing more than just whining about it. However turning a blind eye to piracy has backfired of late, as a massive pirate menace from the south has been systematically making raids on the Iri islands, raising concerns that an invasion of some kind is in the works. Iri believes this may be some kind new plot from the Guild islands or maybe even the Theosian Empire flexing its muscles in a clandestine way.
