Independents

In the city of Elysium, Guilds make up the government. Guilds pool resources together in order to increase their resources and influence. But not everyone wishes to be a part of the guilds or their system.   Independents are those who wish to work a particular profession or job without being a member of the guild that is typically associated with that occupation. There are benefits and downsides both.

  Guild Members:
  • Do not have to pay for access to knowledge of the guild
  • Governmental support from The Council
  • Possible exemption from wages and goods taxes
  • Goods and crafts are seized and given priories based on the needs of the guild and the city.
  • Subject to the rules, regulations, and restrictions of that particular guilds laws.
  • Depending on the guild, required to play within restrictions and politically in order to move up in the Guild.

Independents:
  • Must pay to access guild resources and knowledge
  • No direct support from The Council
  • No path to exemption from goods and wages taxes
  • All goods and crafts are property of the person rather than the guild
  • Not held to any rules regarding the occupation of choice
  • Status of the individual is based solely on the work and opinion of that person.

Culture

As one would expect, the status of the Independent is based the work and opinion of that Independent. The people of Elysium do have a slight apprehension when it comes to Independents due to them not being regulated. However when you are not held to any guild regulation, you are given more freedom for creativity within that profession as a result. Some Independents are highly revered as innovators and artists within their field.     You can, of course, make things that are illegal more easily without guild regulation as well. Thus the general apprehension of the public.
