The Vulgar Unicorn

It is said that the poor districts of Sanctuary are like a onion. There are many layers, and the more you cut your way in the more your eyes might start to water.   In the heart of the poorest district is an are known merely as The Maze: a dense cluster of winding alleys and dead ends built of dilapidation where the only the strongest, or most desperate can survive. And deep in the Maze is that Inn known as the Vulgar Unicorn. A squat, two-story building owned and operated by the human known only as "One-Thumb", it is a place where the drink is cheap, and men and women are... not much more expensive than the drink.   To get an idea of the sort of clientelle this establishment caters to, consider the sign hanging outside the building. There are no words on the sign, such would be pointless as many of the people who would seek the place out cannot read. Instead there is the image of a heraldic unicorn. There is... little doubt as to the masculine gender of the animal. The beast is depicted as rearing on his hind legs, while is front legs are... providing a degree of self-comfort. There is a very good reason this place is called the Vulgar Unicorn. It is not a place for the squeamish, nor the soft-hearted. It could properly be said it's not a place for even the slightly civilized, but as it turns out many who do come to visit Sanctuary will seek it out, and slumming does occur.   There is one solid, always-enforced rule in the Unicorn. No killing. Period. No one knows how One-Thumb does it, but anyone who makes a serious attempt on another's life in the Unicorn finds themselves suddenly outside the city, hanging from a tree outside the main gates. Naked. Almost inevitably, no one makes a second attempt.   The establishment is a favorite of Hakiem's . He goes to collect stories and cheap booze there. The booze passes the time while he awaits the arrival of the next adventurer, come to brag of past exploits and plan future schemes. The regulars have come to know him now, and he is tolerated. They know him as a teller of tales, but a keeper of secrets. And he is always an appreciative listener, who is willing to buy the next round. If there is someone worth listening to. And he has the coin.
