Region - Nightshade Isles
Geography
The Nightshade Isles, also known as the Shadow Isles or Shallow Isles, comprise one large island and several smaller ones, lying to the northwest of mainland Empyrion. These islands, situated on precariously low ground, would have been claimed by the ocean during The Cataclysm if not for the powerful magics of the Elves who inhabit them. Even so, some coastal regions were lost to the depths.
The main island features modest mountain ranges, but its terrain is predominantly lowland, characterized by scattered lakes and a swampy, waterlogged core. Most striking is the magnificent Feywood forest that dominates the island's heart. This Nocturnal forest is unique in its density and vastness, with a canopy so thick that it blankets the ground below in perpetual twilight, earning the isles their "Shadow" moniker. At night, the darkness deepens, yet the forest comes alive with nocturnal flora and fauna. Bioluminescent plants and creatures thrive here, illuminating the undergrowth with an ethereal glow. The plant life exhibits vibrant hues beyond green, with deep blues, purples, and magenta dominating the landscape, creating an otherworldly serenity, especially when fireflies flit through the air.
At the forest’s core are two large lakes, where the canopy parts to reveal the sky. The lakes are encircled by marshlands with shallow waters that are firm underfoot, allowing easy traversal. This wetland is teeming with life: graceful cranes and herons wade through the shallows, turtles bask in quiet repose, and dragonflies dart across the water. The glowing Shimmerflies flutter among the foliage, and the lakes themselves shimmer with the soft light of Moonfin fish.
Scattered throughout the isles are the cities of the Moon Elves, or Shallarei. Their settlements are intricately woven into the natural environment, with fine paved roads connecting structures that harmonize with the surrounding landscape rather than imposing upon it. The Shallarei are deeply spiritual and druidic by nature, integrating their civilization seamlessly with the verdant world around them. Their reverence for nature is evident in every aspect of their architecture and lifestyle, creating a symbiotic relationship that speaks to their profound cultural values.
History
During the 2nd World, the Nightshade Isles were a single landmass, their coastline much closer to the mainland and connected by grand bridges constructed during the golden age of Kleriel. Known then as the province of Shalleria, the region was granted greater autonomy than the empire’s core territories, resulting in a slower process of centralization. The Shallarei’s unique culture, more akin to the Feynarin Elves of Arboria than their mainland counterparts, proved resistant to the customs and directives of their High Elf rulers, complicating efforts to impose imperial unity.
While Elves across the continent embraced the mastery of Arcane magic, heralded as the key to their ascendancy, the Shallarei held steadfast to their spiritual traditions and their devotion to Luna, goddess of the Moon. They practiced forms of magic that, in Kleriel, bordered on heresy. Yet their strength and wisdom proved invaluable to the Imperium, dissuading any attempts to suppress or challenge their ways.
When The Cataclysm struck and the Arcane flows that sustained empires vanished, the Shallarei's adherence to their ancestral powers became their salvation. Unlike many others, their reliance on druidic magic and their unique "dark arts" preserved their civilization. Most critically, their favor with the Gods of Twilight shielded them during this time of chaos. Their ancient pantheon remains the cornerstone of their faith to this day, a testament to their resilience. Outsiders often regard some of these deities as dark or even sinister, but the Shallarei understand that in nature, nothing is purely good or evil - balance is paramount.
As the world reeled from the aftermath of The Cataclysm, the Shallarei emerged among the least devastated cultures. However, this good fortune made the Nightshade Isles a target for desperate refugees. Both Elves and Humans sought to migrate and settle on the Isles to escape the wars and famine that engulfed the mainland. Yet, fiercely protective of their homeland and wary of future threats, the Shallarei repelled all intrusions, ejecting trespassers at swordpoint and retreating into staunch isolationism.
Today, while not as closed off as in the past, the Shallarei remain deeply cautious of outsiders. They maintain a friendly yet distant relationship with Valleria but refuse to formalize an alliance, preferring to walk their path in solitude, guided by the moonlight and the whispers of the Gods of Twilight.
