Caligra

Caligra, also known as the "Shifting Sands", is a stretch of desert land. It has earned its name for the fact that it changes shape every night, as if the land itself were alive. The land itself - even habitats or dens of the wildlife - are moved with these nightly changes, but cities and villages strangely are not moved at all by the shift of the sands, leading to high risks and dangers, especially at nightfall. Travelling through the desert is risky overall, mostly due to the teeming wildlife which consists of countless aggressive beasts, with very few friendly or docile creatures amongst them. The capital of Caligra is Trelador, a bustling trade city and one of the few safe havens of Eldoria, built by humans with the gift and protection of Avalar. The Bestiary of Caligra - found within each city, often on a guild board - contains discovered information on the Beasts found within the Shifting Sands.

Geography

Caligra contains many caverns, hills, dens, as well as structures made by the wildlife within the Shifting Sands. There are also rocky biomes slick with crude, black, oil formed by the Oilscags. The sands change rather often, and thus these notable formations may often move from where they last were seen. The oases are far and very few.

Ecosystem

Much of Caligra is a challenging, dangerous wilderness, covered by both natural and unnatural sandstorms, aggressive beasts, and sweltering heat. Certain species will form their own homes, others using naturally formed habitats. Many will hunt one another, whilst the fewer, more docile species rely on the cacti and few oases throughout Caligra.

Ecosystem Cycles

Although rarely ever consistent, the dunes shift every day at night, changing the locations of many habitats, locales, and points of interest. Many of the beasts of Caligra become easily agitated during this time, and those known to attack become even more aggressive when their habitats are moved closer to small cities and villages. Most of the time, they will relocate though, wanting to avoid that direct conflict so close to their habitats.

Localized Phenomena

The most common phenomena is the shifting of the dunes, whilst one rare Constellation exists only in Caligra, known as the Ortus Constellation. This Constellation occurs whenever Avalar is waking up, urging all creatures to evacuate from where the sands shift the most in that moment, as that is where he was resting. Another phenomena within Caligra is the rapid regrowth of the few kinds of flora which exist. When damaged, harvested, or consumed in any way, so long as their roots are still intact they will rapidly repair and regrow to fruition during the shifting of the dunes.

Fauna & Flora

The flora within Caligra consists of date palms, cotton, olives, figs, citrus fruits, wheat and maize which grow around oases, whilst cacti are rather common throughout the desert away from the oases, strangely more abundant closer to rock formations.

Natural Resources

The flora around oases can be harvested for food and materials, whilst a variety of minerals and materials can be gained from hunting the beasts of Caligra.

It is a bit unclear, is it only the sand and dunes that shift, or is it the entire geography? At different points you seem to imply both. I think it would make more sense if it was just the sand, but that is just me. It is cool that some constellations are liked to the actual physical locations of gods/celestial beings.   How are minerals obtained from hunting beasts, is it something to do with their diet, their magical nature, or just where they live?

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

It was intended as the entire geography itself, excluding buildings such as villages, cities, etc. The intention was that the "natural law" of Caligra was in itself "unnatural" from a normal perspective. To make it more clear I'll likely hop back into some of the notes and fix things up on that to, well, clarify.   As for the minerals from the beasts, I had intended to link this page to another page I had only recently written called the "Bestiary of Caligra".
