Gurn Species in Realm Gate | World Anvil

Gurn

"It was so quick. The moment you thought you'd be able to catch a glimpse of it there wasn't anything there. I only know it was still there because it ripped into my armor a moment later. Plate was rent asunder, blood spilled from me like a fountain, and the pain drenched my senses. I tried to defend myself but it didn't matter. I was a fawn fighting a cougar. I just wish I could have warned my family."   ~ Unknown soul

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Gurn is a feline creature with six muscular legs tipped with razor sharp talons used for climbing trees and rending the flesh of it's prey. The skin texture of this creature is leathery and lacks hair excluding the tip of the tail and whiskers across it's cheeks. The color of the creature depends on the environment due to it's natural ability to adjust the pigmentation of it's skin to allow for better camouflage whilst it hunts.   The Gurn's average height is about 6 feet from ground to shoulder. The average length of the Gurn from snout to tail is about 10 feet. Cubs are about two feet long upon birth and grow to adult size in about 2 years time.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Gurn is a carnivore that needs to consume about 4,000 calories a day to maintain it's body weight. Most of the time the Gurn hunts solo; only occasionally does a Gurn have a hunting partner if it's pregnant and unable to hunt alone successfully.   The Gurn doesn't store food nor does it scavenge if hunts are unsuccessful. It has been noted though that a lame Gurn will stalk other predators until they get a successful kill and then chase the predator away to take the kill. Some say this shows a level of intelligence in Gurn's that other predators lack; whilst others use this as evidence to show that the Gurn may not be the apex predator of the Verdant Jungle.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The sight and hearing of the Gurn are supernaturally sensitive. Extensive studies have shown evidence that the Gurn can see it's prey for an average for 3 miles away in light to no overgrowth. The hearing is of the Gurn is so sensitive it can hear the heartbeat of a creature within 300 feet. This super sensitive hearing is actually one of it's weaknesses as sudden, loud noises in close proximity can cause deafness of the creature quite easily.   Though not magical in nature it is theorized that the Gurn can sense vibrations in the ground but none have been captured, or found, alive to test this theory on and there's only circumstantial evidence at best.
