Flame Mind Condition in Realm Gate | World Anvil

Flame Mind

"This case of the Flame Mind is one of the most severe cases I've seen in my...well your lifetime. The subject exhibits late stage symptoms of the disease. Fever averaging 40 degrees Celsius, rapid, uncontrolled movement of the eyes, unequal dilation of the pupils, spasm of all voluntary and involuntary muscles, full incontinence (note to self have Archamedies make more sanitary pads), lachrymation, and slurred speech. We are unable to determine mental symptoms due to the patient being unresponsive to even the most painful of stimuli I am willing to provide at this time. It is assumed that the subject in question ignored previous signs of overdosing on fire root or was to intoxicated to notice the symptoms. There is little else that we can do for this patient besides make him comfortable till his passing. Once he passes prepare the dissection tools so that we may salvage his organs to allow for experimenting to find some cure to this malady."   ~ Calth Frankenstein

Transmission & Vectors

Flame Mind cannot be transmitted from person to person.

Causes

A subject contracts Flame Mind from overdosing on Fire Root, or prolonged use, or exposure, to the vapors.

Symptoms

Early Symptoms: Slight fever (37 degrees Celsius), slightly slurred speech, minor twitching or spasm of involuntary muscles, and lachrymation.   Moderate Symptoms: Fever (39 degrees Celsius), slurred speech, more sever spasms, lachrymation, and urinary incontinence.   Sever Symptoms: Fever (>=40 degree Celsius), slurred speech, loss of voluntary and involuntary muscle control, lachrymation, urinary and bowel incontinence, and optical hallucinations.

Treatment

Primary treatment of Flame Mind is to stop subsequent exposure to Fire Root and rehab to prevent withdrawal   In more archaic societies Flame Mind is treated with different herbal teas that reduce inflammation and lower body temperature. The treatment makes the patient comfortable, but unless Fire Root is kept from the patient the symptoms will be worse if treatment is maintained.

Prognosis

Those whom can spur the desire for Fire Root can usually recover. Depending on the symptoms the patient may return to normal, but the most likely prognosis is that the patient will experience minor slurring of speech or uncontrollable tremors if the exposure wasn't prolonged. Patients with a long history of Fire Root use will most likely not regain any use of their muscles to a livable degree and are going to have to be cared for.

Sequela

The most common pathological conditions in association with the disease is musculoskeletal spasms or loss of control, incontinence, and slurred speech. Any previous neurological or musculoskeletal conditions the patient had prior to the contraction are usually amplified in severity, but there are some cases that have reported the disease actually inhibits the condition.

Prevention

Moderating the use of Fire Root for it's enhancing properties.

History

The first case of Flame Mind was reordered in the Medica Botanica version 2 by Dr. Wensworth. At first he assumed the patient was suffering from a conjunction of a subdural hematoma and late stage parkinsons. After checking the history of other patients he received, comparing symptoms, and dietary lifestyle he noted that there was a pattern of use of Fire Root in this patient and other misdiagnosed patients. He aptly named the disease Flame Mind.   The disease is mostly concentrated in the southern portion of the Hinterlands where Fire Root more commonly grows.

Cultural Reception

Most victims of this disease are ostracized by their friends and families in more modern societies seeing Fire Root as a drug.   In more rural communities the disease is barely understood or not even known by the populace and is often misdiagnosed.
