Lusies

Lusies, short for "illusions," are one of Ravnica's favorite pastimes. They are stories told via sounds and moving images, projected onto a flat surface from a magically treated crystal.
The magic involved is highly technical, requiring the time and energy of a master illusionist. Some of these illusionists conjure the story and sensory information entirely on their own, essentially writing, directing, and starring in their own illusory production. Most illusionists, however, build physical sets and hire actors to perform their stories, copying the theatrical aspects from memory. These illusionists expend their time and magic on added effects.
It is common practice for a theatre troupe to keep an illusionist on retainer to record their best production.
Over the last few centuries, large lusie conglomerates have risen--run largely by the Orzhov, Dimir, and (to a lesser extent) the Cult of Rakdos. They maintain staffs of writers, directors, and illusionists to churn out story after story. Their big-budget productions are wildly popular, but many independent creators can't compete. To make matters worse, the conglomerates are using their profits and influence to twist existing copyright and patent laws to their benefit. Senidy Productions has developed a method to mass-produce lusies, copying them from the original crystal to many others simultaneously. They own the rights to this method and can distribute their lusies across Ravnica, while independent creators are stuck with small theatres, lusie festivals, and niche conventions.
