Herring Crone (/herr:ing / krohn/)

Matron of Destiny

Overview

The Herring Crone is an ancient Lesser Divine of Destiny, older than even the Kaelic sailors who first charted the waters of Marus. Her origins are shrouded in mystery with some of the earliest records of her existence coming from the gilded murals of the Balao in their cloudtop temples. This Matron of Destiny is said to foresee the many paths the future may take and therefore knows the destinies of all mortal men. Those said to have spoken with the goddess describe her as enigmatic, impersonal, and annoyingly prone to meddling in the affairs of other people; this is especially true for those who catch Desinty's Eye and are thus deemed pivotal by the omniscient lady of prophecy.

I am as I was, as I have as I had, as I would as I will.
I am the living thought...
The pondering mind...
The unaswered question.

History

No Divine on Marus has a more clouded and mysterious past as that of the Herring Crone. She is a truly ancient being, rivaled only by Volcanar, and is an everpresent figure across myths, legends, and recorded history on all of Marus and across all its peoples. She is a well known meddler in the affairs of both mortals and Divine with a propensity for circling around individuals destined for great things. Some say that Caydon Rel was one such mortal to catch Desinty's Eye and it would see his eventual meteoric rise to power over the entire Realm of Seas.

Holy Symbol
Represented by a solitary lidless eye composed of a starfield with Denoculus as its pupil. The eye is said to represent the Matron of Destiny's all-seeing and all-knowing nature with the moon and stars symbolizing her ties to the heavens.

Tenants of Faith

Many across Marus worship the Matron of Destiny seeking the answers to their questions and insights into their future. Her mysterious doctrine was first discovered by the Aviator's Society on the muraled walls of Parasaquedo.

  1. Ask Not The Answered Question, But Your Deepest Unanswered Wish.
  2. Ask Not Of The Whims of Mortals, But The Secret Dreams Of The Divine.
  3. Ask Not The Bitter Why, But The How Of It All.

Those who openly worship the Matron of Desinty, or follow her eclectic teachings, are often known as Seekers on Marus. They practice many varied but strictly adhered to rituals to glean shifting possibilities from the gloom of the future.

Description & Depictions

The Herring Crone is often depicted as a thin elderly woman standing tall and proud despite her ancient appearance. Her voluminous hair is a vibrant multicolored hue and so long that it drags along behind her. Her sharp features frame intelligent and welcoming eyes, making you feel as if compelled to speak your innermost thoughts and deepest desires. When glimpsing into Destiny on Marus her eyes are said to turn into glowing pools of starlight or pearly white copies of Denoculus. She is always shown draped in a billowing and gossamer-thin shawl the same color as midnight. She grasps at a simple brass sextant in her knobbly hands with fingers that were always far too long.
