Aviator's Society
Overview
As Wingships and Dirigibles become more and more common on Marus there are a rising number of those who build, own, and operate them. These adventurous risk-takers chart an unknown field of science and study. Many of these Aeronauts suffer injury or death in the name of the progress and advancement of their field. The cost of a profession in the field of Aeonautics is prohibitively expensive and very few Aeronauts do not come from some manner of wealth. This "wealthy man's hobby" has given the common man the impression that these individuals are nothing more than whimsical time wasters. There is little true respect for the professionals themselves, but there is respect for their complex flying contraptions at the danger of the skies. Each vessel a mechanical wonder and they remain the only reliable transportation to and from the Cloudtop Sea.'Ave ye seen them Wingships flyin' through the sky mister? The Dirigibles cutting through the clouds like waves? Can' say I've seen anythin' I've ever wanted more. NemeN's left foot, I'd kill to be up there! Mark my words mister, one day I'm gonna be an Aeronaut!
Types of Aeronauts
Though all who sail the skies aboard the Airships of Marus are known as Aeronauts, there are fields of specialty even in this newfound industry.
Captains
The Aeronauts who own or operate an Airship are known as Captains among their peers. They are the authorities in command of their vessels and each must ensure both their ship and its crew survives the voyages in one piece.
Pilots
Skillful Aeronauts specializing in executing the steering maneuvers of Airships are known as Pilots amongst their peers. They learn to become one with their vessels, guaging the winds and riding their swells like a surfer.
Engineers
Sharp Aeronauts who specialize in the maintenance and repair an Airship are known as Engineers among their peers. They ensure the intricate machinery of their vessel remains functioning and evaluate Halaydrium use.
Linemen
Daring Aeronauts specializing in armed combat from aboard Airships are known as Linemen amongst their peers. They learn to fearlessly leap from their ships with nothing but a safety line securing them from a long fall to the ground below.
Patchmen
Aeronauts who specialize in the stitched repairs needed for leaking Airships are known as Patchmen amongst their peers. They dangle precariously off the shells of vessels in order to make quick repairs to damaged sections of the envelope or tears in Gas Bladders.
Gasmen
The Aeronauts who specialize in procuring and transporting an Airship's Halaydrium are known as Gasmen among their peers. They use specialized equipment to harvest gas deposits and carefully monitor the gas systems of a vessel.
