Draxis (/drakz:iss/)

The Monkey King

Overview

Draxis is the raging Godbeast of Monkeys, born on the inaccessible Isla De Caveira during the forgotten histories of Marus. Only folklore and myths still tell the tale of the Monkey King's legendary rise to power and escape from his inaccessible homeland. Before the Aviator's Society took to the sky, this primeval island was almost untouched by the outside world and Draxis rose to supremacy over his kind in its utter isolation. He became an uncrowned king with a coronet of bones built from his slain opposition. When no true challengers remained it was only a matter of time before the Godbeast of Monkeys took his Marati progeny and made his escape. It would be no easy task and Draxis would inevitably bring down the judgment of Volcanar upon himself in the endeavor. Judged guilty foir a vile crime, the Godbeast of Monkeys was captured and has spent the last several centuries imprisoned within Juhnmuk Prison in the Sea of Brass.

What was the Monkey King's crime? What vile act brought down the harsh divine judgment of Volcanar? In all my travels I have only learned that if you ask a Marati you will never receive a straight answer to the question. Yet in the halls of High Judgement... perhaps those most elusive secrets can be revealed once more.

History

All on Marus know of the legendary monster infested Isla De Caveira and the furious Godbeast that arose from it. On this island with no true challengers, the Godbeast of Monkeys is said to have first brought the art of pottery to Marus and fostered the original generation of Marati under his great tree. Yet as the Monkey King's unquenched fury only festered and grew, so too did his drive to escape this wretched home. He craved freedom beyond all things yet was a prisoner of the very sea and would stand for it no longer. His flight from Isla De Caveira was no easy task and the result of a heinous crime that coincided with the death of an ancient Divine. The details of this crime are of great debate and even the Godbeast's true guilt is unknown. Volcanar, the Obsidian Arbiter, is said to have brought down judgment upon Draxis and deemed him guilty. The Elemental Exarch forced imprisonment upon the Godbeast of Monkeys and sealed him away within Juhnmuk Prison in the Sea of Brass centuries before Caydon Rel ascended. There he has remained as a symbol of criminality for the people of Marus and a patron for souls condemned to an abysmal fate.

Holy Symbol
Represented by the skulls of two monkeys tied together by an iron chain. The skulls represent the warring halves of the Marati with the chain symbolizing their inescapable bestial nature and the Monkey King's long imprisonment.

Tenants of Faith

Few people on Marus worship the Monkey King beyond those that exist among the Marati. After generations of imprisonment, his unclear doctrine has been left to the cloudy interpretations of the divided Monkeyfolk's often inaccurate oral history.

  1. Live Free.
  2. Burn Bright.
  3. Die Hard.

The Marati Nomads are the most well known group to still openly worship the Monkey King. Their ways and teachings are said to have been preserved down the generations from a time when Draxis was free and still walked among his people.

Description & Depictions

Draxis is always depicted as an imposing Marati at the peak of his prime with cords of rippling muscles and towering stature. His voluminous bright red hair is pulled back in numerous plaited ropes adorned with entire skeletons woven throughout. His scarred face is fierce and etched with wrathful anger, making you feel as if compelled to cringe and bow before his stern gaze. The blazing anger in his eyes is often depicted as if Volcanar himself plucked them from the embers of a dying bonfire and placed them in the Monkey King's charred eyesockets. He is often shown wearing a traditional Nomad's Sash in vibrant jungle hues wrapped around his waist where it secures an enormous thighbone club. On his brow sits a coronet of bones, woven together as if they had once been as pliable as string.
