Acropolis (/aa:krop:oh:liss/)

Echo of the Sea

The Echo of the Sea

Overview

Acropolis is the fading remnant of a Human Exarch dealt a mortal blow by Caydon Rel during his ascension to divinity. The once-mighty god had ruled over all of Humanity on Marus before being reduced to a shadow of his former self. This fading Echo still haunts the place of his murder in what is now the Sea of Souls, the ruin of an ancient tower would come to be known over the ensuing years as the Flooded Acropolis. As the Divine of Relics he managed to cling to life, power, and sanity by relying on the surviving ruins of his people and the Gifted's obsession over their most treasured artifacts. Yet with each passing year, he grows more reclusive, and some believe madder, atop the shattered throne of Humanity. The deathless Soddens are a product of this uncontrolled descent from divine power and are inevitably a result of the mortal wound dealt to him by the Lord of Magic. These progeny barely ever speak of their creator whether that be out of some sense of respect or a genuine lack of understanding concerning their patron god. It is only known that they are created when the fading god turns his madness upon a Gifted unlucky enough to be taken by his waters.

My lord...My king...Where have you gone?
Where is the light? Where is its song?
Why can I not hear you? Why do you not answer?
Do you not hear me?!
Do you not care?!
...Do you not hear your children weep?!
...Do you not hear us cry out for Sanctuary...

History

Little of recorded history survived the Breaking of the Crown including the true identity of Acropolis before his fall. The wounded god's past has been entirely eclipsed by the rising age of magic, The Banded Circle's historical scholastic ban, and his own wild descent into madness. The Divine's blood is said to pollute the waters around the Flooded Acropolis and is what gives the Sea of Souls its ethereal life-stealing glow. Sitting atop the shattered throne at the ruin's peak, the Echo of the Sea can be heard muttering and whispering the mad dying thoughts of a Faith-starved Divine.

Holy Symbol
Represented by a gilded dagger whose broken silvered blade is held within the mouth of a skull screaming as if it had been plunged up into it. Most believe the symbol represents the mortal blow struck against this once great Divine.

Tenants of Faith

Few people on Marus worship the Echo of the Sea beyond those that exist among the Soddens. His limited doctrine is the work of loyal worshippers who have sacrificed their minds to bear witness to his mad whisperings and make sense of the chaos.

  1. Collect The Past.
  2. Honor The Dead.
  3. Right The Wrong.

There is no organized worship of Acropolis and each group or individual often interprets and defines their own modifications or additions to his core beliefs. He has become among the weakest Divine on Marus since his descent into madness.

Description & Depictions

Acropolis is often depicted as a sickly old man hunched over with age and withered to the bone. His thin black hair is long and patchy where it has begun to slough away with his scalp. His sunken face is haunted and etched with agonizing pain, making you feel as if compelled to come closer and get a better look at his eyes. The empty sunken pits of his eye sockets are often depicted empty but those who have gazed into the mad god know they are home to nothing more than faint pinpricks of cold flame deep within his skull that clawed at your very soul. He is always shown wearing a long flowing robe drapped over his near-skeletal body while clutching at a broken crown and a bent scepter made of gold.

Author's Notes

Acropolis is an exploration into the question of what would happen when a Divine deals a mortal blow to another Divine on Marus. How would the experience change that Divine, what would become of them and their Domains? How would such a Divine warp the Sophonts, ecosystems, and even the other Divine of their Realm?
