Dreamspace

There are many interpretations of dreams in Quoth. The vast majority write them off as simple hypnogogic hallucinations, while others believe them to be visions from gods or other entities or prophecies. Yet others believe them to be much more complex, then any one theory alone.
Dreamspace is the theoretical proposition that dreaming occurs not solely within the mind, but on a discrete metaphysical plane. A realm unknowingly shaped by the errant thoughts and subconscious activity of mortals across the prime material and beyond. Within this plane, each dreamer is believed to generate their own demiplane: a self-contained realm constructed and governed entirely by the individual dreamer's mind. These personal demiplanes are referred to, appropriately, as subconsciouses.

Subconscious

It is hypothesized that individuals don’t usually have the same dream because each person’s subconscious creates its own demi plane within the greater realm of dreams. A person can only experience the same dream if the cross over into another person’s demi plane, or vice versa. This may not be completely uncommon if the notion that mortals frequently wander out of their subconscious into that of another’s holds true, but who that is only limited by the number of living creatures in the material, feywild, shadowfell, and inner planes. Therefore, the likelihood that two acquaintances find each other in the dream realm is extremely low, and even if they did, their altered surrealistic perception would likely prevent them from recognizing it.

Divinty in Dreamspace

One of the first questions posed to proponents of Dreamspace theory concerns the Divine. How does a god hold dominion over a plane shaped entirely by mortal perception? Can a deity even exist in such a place? The answer varies as broadly as the question of what a god fundamentally is, but the prevailing consensus draws on a useful analogy: that of an idea.
An idea can alter significantly depending on an individual’s perception. For example, the idea that killing people is wrong may resonate similarly with a vast majority, but warps, changes, and weakens to those killing out of mercy, in war, avenging the death of a love one, asserting power over another. In large part, an individual’s faith in the gods are built of off their ideas of what they represent. In the fluid realms of the outer planes, a deity is able to impose its will on these thoughts and idea. In a sense, concepts shape perceptions (i.e. goodness generates the lands of Elysium, badness generates the lands of Hades). This differs in the dream realm. In this plane, concepts are shaped by the perceptions of an individual (i.e. red is green to a color-blind individual, killing is okay if it’s a bad person). Since the demi planes of the dream realm are a collection of individuals’ subconsciousness, this generates spaces that tangibly affects a being composed of or reliant on ideas and thought. Theoretically, if one were to take an idea and pass it though a subconscious, the probability of it staying the same is quite low. If it were to survive, it would likely come out the other side at best, tangentially related to its former self. Now take that idea and pass it though 5, 10, 100 subconscious demi planes, and the probability of survival is much lower, and rapidly approaches 0.
