Arathel

The continent of Arathel reaches from the Silver Fjords located in the far northern latitudes down to Razorvine Jungle located a bit north of the equator of Quel. In the west, a curved line of volcanic islands, the Tataki Archipelago, has rifted off of the mainland creating the Shinryoku Sea. Inland, along the mainland's west coast, lie the Reder's Folly Mountains with several active volcanoes that have erupted within historical times. Further east is the Storm Rift, which is slowly splitting the Khahad Desert away from Arathel, and the Greenwall River, which acts as a natural southern border to the harsh desert step land. In the southwest, one finds the uninhabited (at least by the civilized races) Razorvine Jungle and volcanically active Smoldering Waste. The southeast hosts the Sunken Karst, an old fragment of the continent built primarily of limestone that then eaten away by water, with more resistant rock forming awe inspiring towers. Finally, the central grasslands of the continent are marked by Blightsource Crater, which formed three decades ago in a divine explosion of power; the fallout from this explosion altered some of the people of Quel (the God-Touched) and several of Arathel's settlements in bizarre ways.

The Nations of Arathel

Arathel has never been united by a single ruler, but the boundaries, number, and names of the countries have changed over time. Ancient texts talk of the Great Alliance, when many, if not all, of the nations across the continent participated in a shared peace. This peace was not to last as trade conflicts, famine, and other struggles slowly broke down the lines of communication between nations and led to the Somber Age, a time of war and strife. Now, in the Current Age, the nations are once again stable.

Currently, in the year 2531 CA (current age; 4481 SR), Arathel hosts six primary nations, the loose protectorate of The Free Cities and two independent city-states and surrounding settlements (Tanglemoor and Thagidal ). The six primary nations include The Kingdom of Fenlor, Porthca, Fiumen, Khahad, Novdolen, and the Tataki Empire . There are no active conflicts between the nations, but tensions and small skirmishes are not unknown. Each nation has a designated capital and a few to several smaller cities and towns of note. In addition, numerous small villages pepper the landscape in the spaces between the larger towns and cities.
