Les Marais Severin
Overview
Les Marais Severin is one of the three Great Swamps of Les Marais Duluk. It is closest to Desmarais and is largely unsettled. Hunters and gatherers from Desmarais travel into these swamplands to harvest natural resources. Les Marais Severin is notable for it's large, rare breed of alligators.Geography
Les Marais Severin lies along the western coast of Les Marais Duluk and is fed by water from the Qaderian Ocean. It features deeper waterways than the other Great Swamps. Boats are the primary method of transportation throughout the waterways of Les Marais Severin from the ports in Desmarais. Large patches of wetlands are walkable, though chest high reeds grow in these areas making navigation slow and tricky. Iron deposits beneath the swampy terrain exist as well and are mined by those from Desmarais and other surrounding towns.
Ecosystem
Saltwater fish from the Qaderian Ocean populate the western edge of these swampwaters. The line between fresh and saltwater is formed by a natural estuary closer to the coastline. By the time the swamp arrives towards the center of Les Marais Duluk, the water has been cleaned of its saltwater and is replenished by the natural rains. Large catfish and freshwater eels populate these waters along with massive alligators. Large crane birds migrate throughout these swamplands as well as many amphibians and smaller reptiles. The area is rich with insect life including particularly persistent mosquitoes that breed in the oftentimes stagnant pools of water around the swamp. Gnarled trees grow throughout the chest high reed fields in the shallower areas of the swamp. Bats and owls populate these trees and rodent populations do well in the insect filled swamplands.
