Suzail
The Crown of Cormyr
“The light of Suzail shines brightest just before the smoke.” — Old Cormyrean proverb
Overview
Suzail, capital of Cormyr, stands as the heart of the kingdom’s pride and the symbol of its long-enduring monarchy. Rising along the coast of the Dragonmere, its alabaster walls and violet banners once reflected the kingdom’s stability and wealth. Yet beneath the grandeur lies a city straining under the weight of progress — where marble foundations groan beneath brass fittings and Magistone hums within the bones of ancient castles.
Suzail is where Cormyr’s nobility dine beneath chandeliers powered by Magistone light while soldiers march through alleys lit with the same glow. It is where tradition and invention collide — neither willing to yield.
History
Founded nearly fourteen centuries ago by the first Obarskyrs, Suzail began as a fortified port and quickly grew into the political and cultural nucleus of Faerûn’s western coast. For centuries, it prospered through trade, diplomacy, and faith in the royal line.
After the Sundering Rift tore through the sky, the city entered a new age of transformation. Fragments of Magistone and divine residue from the rift were discovered along the shores of the Dragonmere, drawing artificers, scholars, and dreamers from across the continent. The city swelled overnight.
During the Magistone Renaissance, towering pipes and conduits were retrofitted onto centuries-old keeps. Lamps fueled by refined Magistone replaced the oil lanterns that once flickered along the cobblestone streets. Air hummed with arcane resonance; the night glowed with soft amethyst light. For a time, Suzail was a marvel — the jewel of an empire that seemed to have captured the future.
But progress came faster than wisdom. The strain of rapid industrialization widened the gap between noble and commoner, between artifice and faith. The city’s once-proud architecture began to twist under its own reinvention — gargoyles of stone perched beside copper turbines, cathedrals lined with Magistone wiring that hummed like trapped angels.
By the eve of the Siege of Suzail, the city had become a paradox: radiant, defiant, and hollow. Its gilded towers still shone across the bay, but the streets below thrummed with unease — a kingdom’s heart glowing too hot to last.
