Otherworld

Otherworld is an extra-dimensional realm that is home to Merlin and Camelot. It is a universe where the forces of magic are very strong and is rumored to be the source of magic for the entire multiverse. Otherworld's inhabitants are similar to people and creatures from various Earth myths: Elves, dwarves, humans, dragons, and many other creatures live there in a seemingly low technological environment.
Government
No formal central government for Otherworld exists. Each culture is responsible for governing their own “people”. Law and order are maintained by the Knights of the Round Table who enforce a mutually agreed upon set of simple laws. Merlin is often seen as the representative and Prime Minister of Otherworld, although he rarely takes any active role in the governing of the planet.
Inhabitants
The number of sentient beings on Otherworld is staggering in comparison to many other planets. No accurate census has ever been taken of the world's inhabitants; no one has ever cared to do it. It is known that many species bearing a resemblance to mythic people and creatures of Earth live here as well as many "alien" species. Below is a short, and non-inclusive, list of known species of intelligent beings:
Dragons Fairies Goblins Trolls
Humans Elves Dwarves Gnomes
Leprechauns Ogres Halflings Giants (various)
Merfolk Gzornimplatz Orcs
In addition to the individual species, many diverse cultural divisions exist. As an example, there are several tribes of Native American humans that inhabit the plains of Otherworld.
Language
Each of the species and cultures have their own language, but a "field of comprehension" seems to exist all around Otherworld allowing fluent communication between different creatures and peoples.
Religion
As with language, each species and culture have their own beliefs. Many of them are Earth religions that have been modified due to their surroundings. Religious differences are tolerated and conflict along these lines is rare.
Technology
Although any level of technology is available to the inhabitants of Otherworld, most choose not to use anything above Earth Medieval technology. Magic performs the function of most technology and science is seen as simply not needed. The highest level of technology is used by Merlin in the Starlight Citadel. His grasp of technology and magic have grown to the point of being indistinguishable from one another.

Climate

Much of Otherworld can be considered a temperate zone. Temperature and weather are carefully controlled from the Starlight Citadel. Storms occur but are never destructive. Temperature ranges from about 78° in the summer to 30° in the winter. Rainfall is also carefully controlled averaging about 50 inches per year. Snowfall remains on the ground year-round in the higher mountain regions and never falls in the lower tropical areas.

Fauna & Flora

Most of Otherworld's flora resemble Earth varieties or are direct transplants from Earth. Animals range from recognizable species of rabbits to mythical beasts such as unicorns and dragons. Many creatures that would be non-sentient on Earth possess intelligence on Otherworld.

Natural Resources

Otherworld's largest resource is magic energy, which is directed through the Vortex to other dimensions. Otherworld also boasts a rich mineral wealth of gold, silver, gems, and many other valuable commodities. Food grows in abundance and many herd animals are raised to feed the population.

Tourism

  • Avalon: A floating island known throughout the multiverse for its healing and recuperative powers. It is rumored that this is where King Arthur was brought after his final battle to heal until he was needed again.
  • Camelot: This is the actual castle of Camelot built by Arthur on Earth. After the destruction of the Round Table Fellowship, Merlin transported the entire castle to Otherworld in order to perpetuate its existence as a myth on Earth. On Otherworld, the Knights of the Round Table have reformed and keep the peace and meet here.
  • Starlight Citadel: This floating castle is the home of the magician Merlin. From here he can survey and direct events in any known universe. It is heavily fortified with many mystic defenses to ensure Merlin will not be disturbed.
  • Vortex: A swirling mass of mystic energy that orbits Otherworld. Magical energy is drawn from Otherworld and sent through it to other dimensions. The exact means of this transferal are unknown.
