Petunia grew up in Belfast, Ireland with her parents and sister, Lily (b. 1843). Petunia spent her girlhood jealous of her prettier, talented baby sister, and became determined to prove that she was better by marrying someone successful and becoming wealthy. She married young business student, Vernon Dursley, in 1862, but hard times pushed him to the shipbuilding firm of Harland and Wolff. Their first child, Dudley, was born in 1866 to increasing poverty, and by the time their second child, Rose, was born, the family was scraping just to survive, having spent Petunia's entire dowry on rent and food.
An inheritance from Lily's death allowed Petunia to bring her family out of the gutter and into a stately terrace house on Privet Drive. Vernon and Marge then rise in their jobs, and Petunia settled into a life as a lady of leisure, spoiling her children while ignoring her orphaned nephew.
