Lient'roc Forest: Geography & Biology
Life in Lient'roc
Flora
The forest layer of Lient'roc is largely large coniferous redwooded trees known colloquially as dew wood. Dew wood timber is highly sought after due to its natural fire resistance; the export of it is part of how Baron Ivan Iverfort pays for all the projects in the area. Dew wood trees are quite tall, ranging from 200-300 feet on average. In the deepest parts of the forest, they have been known to reach 350 feet tall. Foliage is sparse on the lower 2/3 of the trunk; the branches at the top spread wide and often intersect with the branches of other trees, creating a leafy ceiling high above the forest floor. As such, the trees themselves do little in the way of creating places for animals to hide. Local fauna often sleep in the caves and only venture into the forest for hunting, etc. The forest floor consists of ivies, ferns, and low-lying shrubs and bushes. Many kinds of lobed berries thrive, and are often used in Chelu-kaan brewing interprises. In cenotes, where the line between the terranean and subterranean is blurred, dew wood trees often create natural ladders for creatures of various type to ascend and descend with relative ease. See Caves: Geography & Biology for more information about cenotes. Awakened Plants are also relatively common in Lient'roc. Simple awakened shrubberies, treants, dryads, shambling mounds, flowers which can charm even an elf, and the occaisonal foul corpse flower are enough to keep most denizens of Port Shimmerly out of the forest... and that's only the plant life.Fauna
Lient'roc may isolate the Chelu-kaan and Port Shimmerly from much of the mainland of the Sword Coast, it is still connected to it, and as such, plays host to a similar range of forest-dwelling creatures. Common beasts such as boars, crocodiles, giant toads, snakes, spiders, and even the uncommon and unpleasant owlbear can be found. Because of the proximity of the cave system, there are also a wide variety of trogolophiles -- creatures which may prefer subterranean habitats, but still venture out into the forest for various purposes. As such, finding a cave bear, cave lion, or cave leopard prowling near a cave entrance is not at all uncommon.Geography
